Read an interview with a back surgeon about MPJ's case, reduced my concern about selecting him.
* Most players return to normal PER in 2 years
* Most players do NOT return to normal in 4 months, which is where MPJ is at. In other words, he should get significantly better over the next year & a half
* The risk of re-injury is there but small. "There’s re-herniation rates of 10-to-12 percent over the next 5-to-10 years..."
* "“This is an outpatient surgery,” Fischer says, ”like if someone had a knee scope. So you’re only in the hospital for the day of the surgery and then you go home...Microdiscectomy surgeries typically last an hour, and patients leave the hospital the same day they walk in...This is one of the least extensive surgeries you can have in the spine..."
The biggest concern here is that he won't be very good for all of his rookie season. But surely we're thinking longer term than just next year, we're not winning any championship in 2019.
Of course, I'd still rather have a high upside go with no injury concerns but at #7, if he's the BPA...
