It’s laughable he’s not a top 5 MVP candidate while Luka is on a near .500 team with much higher expectations. It’s like some players are being punished for bad team, others not. PS these are my two favorite NBA players, so it’s nothing personal.
sga has been great but he's not in the same echelon as the top guys so far. the curious thing about sga season is how many 2pt shots he's making. 10+ a game. uncommon. giannis is the only other guy doing that this year, and zion williamson is the only guy to do it over a full season since 2007. the last guards to do it are allen iverson and kobe bryant in 2005-06, before that michael jordan in 1997-98.
basically, sga has been a serious outlier on how prolific and efficient he has been inside 3pt line, hard to see him keep that up over a full season. for the sake of his body's wear and tear maybe he should increase his 3pt attempts...
This isn’t it. He’s not Luka/Giannis level, but there is zero data I’m finding that reflects he isn’t in the tier with Tatum, Mitchell etc that people are praising here. I personally think he should be 4th after Giannis/Luka/Tatum. The difference is he’s the only superstar player who doesn’t even have a second all star caliber guy next to him out of the MVP candidates, maybe outside of Jokic if Jamal doesn’t return to form.
Ps.. he’s been playing this way for years. 538 wrote about his prolific driving frequency in 2021. In 2020 they wrote about how insane he is in ISO. It’s not an outlier. HE may be an anomaly, but it’s been sustained. There is no fluke here. It’s literally his game and skill set. It’s not hard on his body at all. Nobody can stay in front of him in the league. He rarely takes contact like Ja for example, because he doesn’t make explosive, risky moves driving. He goes AROUND contact.
Do you remember last season by any chance? He averaged 31/7/6 the second half of last season after returning from injury. Doing exactly the same things. We have enough sample size to know this is sustainable.
WS/48 around .240, better than Tatum (and most of these MVP’s), TS 63%, +14 PP100 differential… I mean he’s worthy of MVP talks.
