No draft pick is guaranteed to be a great or bad NBA player yet most people think we're incapable of drafting a great player since we'll most likely be picking at #16. I mean 2 of our best players on this team are second round picks. The draft is about picking the best potential NBA player not the best college player.
It's all about chances. Yes, we're not doomed because we're gonna pick mid first round. But you have to acknowledge two things:
1) Chances of hitting gold are way higher in the Top 5 of the draft than it is in the mid-round.
2) This particular draft class is very top heavy.
In most cases where a mid-round or lower player turned out to be a franchise player type, he's either
1) A massive overachiever that far surpassed the upside he showed in college and prior. (Kawhi, Butler)
2) International player with limited exposure. (Giannis, Jokic)
The first type is completely random, there's really no chance of knowing this is going to be the case. The second one is immensely risky. And since we have no pick in 2018, a complete bust of a pick would really set the franchise back.
Also, drafts have never been about "picking the best college player". If that were the case, Buddy Hield would go No. 1 last year.
