assuming that fields is on the standard rookie learning curve, i'd tend to agree. but maybe he shines in camp/preseason
NFL QBs don’t learn holding a clipboard on the sidelines. The popular fiction about sitting for a year is so overblown. NFL is a learning process on the field during games at high speed. The sooner he gets out there, the better the Bears will be more quickly down the line. Wasted time on Dalton will have the fans and media breathing down the Bears neck. Hopefully they use the right calculus and are blowing smoke trying to tamp down expectations.
The popular fiction that players need to play in games in the NFL to develop is overblown. This isn't isn't nba where there are just as many games as practices. This is the NFL. There are several practices a week and one game a week. And everyone should be getting just as many reps in every practice as they would in any game. Players in the NFL develop in practice, in a controlled environment where it's less likely that they'll get injured.
I want Fields to win the job, and I'm sure he will very early on, but you don't just put a guy in the games for him to develop. It's just an unnecessary spotlight on a development player.
