In what respect does it hurt the pick they get a lot younger and less leadership. Are you thinking they use the cap space to bolster the roster in a big way if Conley is moved?
It means they add two lottery picks this year, probably Morant and a wing, or Barrett or Culver at 2 and Garland or White at 6..
And either they bring in a free agent this summer, or take on a short bad contract to help out a team near the luxury tax for an asset - but assume they’re bottom 6 next year - on July 1, 2020, they could have Morant, Culver, Jaren Jackson, their 2020 top 6 pick, and like 80-90 million in cap space. Depending on the way their lotto picks have developed, that’s a good time to either chase max players or, more likely, follow the Philly model and add some Reddick/Amir types to put a normal team around their youth for a season or two.
That’s their likely path into the 2020-21 season (where the pick is unprotected) anyway, but trading Conley for a lotto talent now would shift the odds their rebuild/recovery happens sooner..
I think NOP probably gets the 6 for Jrue, then MEM has to hope they can send Conley to the Bulls for the 7..
