More injury assurance & depth for more nights off for Curry than consistent rotation. Bjelica-esque role.
I just don't think that should be our priority. We have Curry, Klay, Poole and DDV as primary players for two positions (96 minutes). Even if one player is rested or out with injury, 96 minutes could be filled. If Curry is the one who's out, you may need more ball handling but is Bledsoe really that player for GS? I'm skeptical of the fit. Inefficient on-ball Guards aren't exactly our type of player.
And obviously that's not all we have for this position. Moody can and will play the 2 at least some, and on rest days you'd expect them to want to play Rollins and possibly their two-way guys which, as of now, are smaller wings. I just see more of a need to fill the
actual Bjelica (and OPJ) role, i.e. a shooting big.
And this does not even take into account the Bledsoe side of it. Why would he come to the Warriors for the minimum when all we can offer him is irregular playing time in an injury-and-rest-insurance capacity? Not sure if he has any market but if there's even one other team interested, I have to believe that it's a more attractive destination to him. It may be his last chance to showcase himself for a non-minimum and/or multi-year contract, so he can't afford to not play at all half of the time.
I agree Bledsoe shouldn’t be priority but really Myers’s only needs to send a text saying “min?”. If Bledsoe wants a chance to rebuild a little value and have a shot at a ring warriors are probably the best option. He can fit GP2’s role from last year where he can just focus on defense and hitting open shots. If he can get his 3pt shot to the 35% range and play decent overall defense we could find a role. I doubt Rollins fills much more than Chiozza role especially with his injury. Moody will be slotted at the 3 more simply because our lack of depth there. DDV is intriguing but needs just as much of a rebuild as Bledsoe after last season.
I do like them targeting another big man but there’s not a ton of options left. Gallinari is not officially signed yet but seems to be committed to BOS. Taj Gibson or Hassan Whiteside probably the next best but after that it’s Millsap or Alridge flyer. Not exactly ideal options. May be better to roll with the kids to start the season and keep an eye to the buy out market mid season.
I agree with pretty much all of this. I do think Rollins has more to his game (even as a rookie) than Chiozza, both offensively and defensively. He’ll still be the 5th guard overall, with not much time, but I don’t see the need to get another guard such as Bledsoe being a big priority. (And actually, Quinones on a 2-way is a 6th guard, though he’s definitely more of a off-guard than ball handler.)
I am worried about the depth at the 4 and 5. Theoretically Wiseman is going to be back, and Kuminga will get more time, but the losses of Porter and Bjelica are potentially huge. Aside from Wiseman’s injury, we had unusually good health amongst our big guys - Draymond missed some time, and Porter was in-and-out a little bit, but Looney didn’t miss a game, and Bjelica was always available. It’s inevitable we’ll have some more injuries up-front than we did last year, and we obviously don’t have anybody who can really stretch the floor. (I don’t but Wiseman’s 3-point shot.) So to me, the obvious guy to be interested in is Juancho, if he’ll take a minimum deal. He’s not great, but he has size, experience in complex offenses (I’m thinking Spain moreso than what he’s had in the NBA), and can hit open 3’s pretty decently. He’s not huge, but in a pinch could play some 5 (along with his natural fit as a 4). It’s a definite roster gap if we have absolutely no stretch bigs on the roster, and right now you’d have to say that’s the case.
