Next year, can the (Bulls - depth) win a Chip?

Post#1 » by RichardsRival3 » Wed Jun 27, 2012 5:15 am

We all know the Bulls are going to make a lot of cuts due to the luxuary tax.

Can the Bulls win a championship with our current players, minus last year's depth?

A roster something like:

Rose/JL3
Rip/Vet min SG
Deng/Butler
Boozer/Taj
Noah/Asik - I am unclear if the Bulls will pay all 4 of Boozer/Taj/Noah/Asik.

Can the this team beat the Heat and win a championship with this roster next year?

Not with that group. It isnt necessarily the depth, which is less important in the playoffs. It's 2 things:
1. Rose and the knee
2. lack of 2nd option.

Not a chance unless Lebron AND Durant get hurt.

Anything is possible (hat tip, KG), but stand pat - depth plan, I would put the odds lower than they were to start 2010, which I had fairly dim due mainly to Keith Bogans, and what his role meant about our offense.

Should for the sake of completeness add, that even if we brought everyone - and I mean everyone - back, our odds would still seem less likely than last year, due to loss of HCA, and unlikelihood of Rose being 100% by the end of the year. As well as two main cogs, esp offense ones, Boozer and Rip, being older, when that side is already our weaker side.

Having said that, and facing up to such reality, it doesn't mean there is some alternative that automatically beats those odds. When your star goes down with a torn ACL, sometimes those are just the breaks, you have to accept at least one year (hopefully only one) of slight regression.

Next year is a free ride if you think about it though no one will be expecting the bulls to go deep in the Offs with Rose only back a few months from his ACL. I could see us repeating 2010-2011's outcome and losing to MIA in the ECF if we get lucky with seedings and avoid Miami till the ECF.

Lets be honest with our selves, we have about a 15-25 percent chance of being able to get past Miami in the playoffs in the next 5 years, unless we get incredibly lucky and steal Dwight from Orlando or something of that magnitude.

Might be best answered when you actually know the roster?

But yes they can win a chip for sure. They'll have chips.

We were so close this year. We don't even know what our team will look like next year so I think this thread is a bit premature. If we make the right acquisition, I think we can definitely compete for it. Maybe not from the #1 seed though.

No we were not. We did not win a play off series. What were we close too?

Yeah we won 2 playoff games, you need 16.

Maybe Derrick should get a mouth guard with the roman numeral XVI on it for motivation like LBJ6 had.
