OT: The Bible?

Being a devout Southern Baptist person myself the Bible and its words are very important and vital to my every day life. I am curious as to the feelings of board members and the Bible and what it means to them as it pertains to moral and society issues especially.

An awesome read but to take it as gospel and live my life by it? Haven't made up my mind yet.

It would be cool if they made some gnarly realistic movies from it though. I guess Aronofsky is doing the story of Noah and the Ark. Might be awesome he does really cool stuff.

There used to be a comic series that was all violent bible stories. Can't remember what it's called.

True power corrupts and the Bible has been at the heart of many wars and oppression. I don't believe it hasn't been manipulated by man, I personally doubt it is in it's true/original form. Humanity has a way of corrupting everything. I was raised Catholic and a lot of it doesn't jive with me.

I personally firmly believe the Bible is legit in its form. I do think there is a lot of misinterpretation of the words but the actual words themselves are sincere IMO. I think it is important to truly know the real meaning and purposes behind the words and be knowledgeable to know when a worldy person spreads misinterpretation of them.

I know its September and everything, but this is way, waaaay OT. And potentially emotional. I'm not going to lock it or move it for now, but lets be respectful of opposing points of view please.

Also, there is a long thread on the Current Affairs board that was originally about gay marriage and the Bible, but evolved into a much more broad discussion of religion and atheism if you are interested in the thoughts of non-Bulls realgmers:

All i know about the bible is that the paper is remarkably similar to rolling paper, and during my youth my family bible was missing more then a few verses.

I am open to honest religion conversation and I wont throw stones but I will tell you when I think are wrong and in gay marriage for instance there really is no question in my mind that the Bible clearly states marriage is between a man and a woman. I don't think that makes me a bigot either.

The problem I have is that we are supposed to have freedom of religion, which many religious people seemingly deem as freedom from religion. I have no problem with people being against gay marriage and abortion and all of that stuff, until they reveal that the sole reason they are trying to vote that way is based on their religion.

I personally believe that shaping an entire nation's policies in favor of one religion (overarching, not sect) goes against the very creation of our government. Today, marriage is no longer a religious sanctity, it comes with many many legal rights and breaks as well. When you begin denying people these benefits because they are gay, that becomes a problem in my eyes.

Basghetti, The New Testament rendered the Old Testament obsolete, The New Testament is the New Covenant, and it clearly states this within itself. I feel like relying on anything from the Old Testament is problematic because not only is it outdated by its own religion, but people become very picky with what they want to follow.
