Would this factor into the J.R. suspension in any way? Will the league office take this into consideration?
They should not. As I wrote with Olynyk, the suspension should be based on the action and degree of intent, not the result. Unfortunately, I doubt the league agrees with me on that.
In practice, the league may treat things differently depending on the outcome. But I don't see how they can publicly state that as grounds for how they dole out punishment. Regardless, hitting someone hard enough to cause temporary unconsciousness/loss of faculties that then results in an injury is fairly straightforward. The severity of the knee injury to me has little meaning. What matters is the original intent to hit him, aiming at the head with a fist and connecting hard enough to cause unconsciousness.
I would be surprised if this is less than 5. Actually I would be mildly surprised (and disappointed because it means a long series) if JR plays in round 2. JR does have a long history. Even worse for him, he has a long rap sheet just in the last 2 years. This will be his 4th suspension in the last 2 years and he's been fined 3 times over that span. Last year he started the year on a 5 game drug suspension. Last year in the playoffs, game 3 of round 1 he threw an elbow and was suspended for a game. This past November, he was suspended for a nut punch on Glen Rice JR. Now he does this. I would be happy if he was teaming in the back court with Stephon Marbury next year.
