Verlander Gets Record Extension

Post#1 » by Snakebites » Fri Mar 29, 2013 5:31 pm

7 years 180 million per ESPN.

Crazy, crazy money for a pitcher, but after King Felix got his big deal inked I figured there would be some pressure to extend Verlander to comparable money, too.

Thoughts?

its risky to throw 7 years at a pitcher, but im glad we have him locked in through his prime. I would have hated to see him in another teams uniform.

The bottom line is that's what it was going to take all along.

Its a lot, but if the alternative is seeing him in pinstripes a while down the road I think its an easy call.

Wasn't there also an option for an 8th year at 22 million?

Not sure who has the option though, team or JV

Absolutely. Pay him now because his price will only go up if he has another monster year, and what would be worse than to see him pitching for the Yankees, no hitting the Tigers on his way to a HOF career, and thinking, "Yep. We let that guy go." I actually thought is was a pretty decent contract in the grand scheme. I was fully expecting $30M per. And what better guy to have as the face of your franchise for years.

Lotta money but this is what elite pitching costs. It keeps him in Detroit for the duration of his career, so it is hard to complain
