What about him?
edit: NM I just read about how we almost landed him last night? Apparently we're still in contact with Baltimore over it.
I'm a bit worried about whether or not his name ends up being on that Mitchell report but beyond that this would be a fantastic pickup IMO. His power #'s are down but he's still a solid hitter and has a good OBP. Major upgrade over Everett offensively and I think he can still play good enough defense.
Honestly I'd rather move him over to 3rd and sign Eckstein. It won't happen but can you imagine this lineup?
Eckstein
Tejada
Pence
Berkman
Lee
Matsui
Bourn
Towles
Pitcher
..or something along those lines. Tejada would be a better fit in the 2nd spot than Matsui or Bourn because he's proven he can get on base consistantly as well as drive in runs. If you wanted to be traditional about it you could do this:
Eckstein
Matsui
Pence
Berkman
Lee
Tejada
Bourn
Towles
Pitcher
That's not bad
I like their plans to put Pence in the 3rd spot also, I think it should go Pence/Berkman/Lee. With the lack of real pitching available and our lack of depth in the starting rotation, I can understand the need to upgrade the offense and hope some of our guys can step up in the rotation. Adding Tejada(once again, assuming he isn't on that Mitchell report list) would help alot.
If our rotation can be "decent" outside of Oswalt, our bullpen should be decent as well, so as long as we can score some more runs atleast we'd be fun to watch and can compete, especially in our division.
As long as we're only giving up guys like Burke/Scott/Everett/other scrubs...

Still remains to be seen what other moves will be made. Everett or Wigginton being traded along with Burke for some pitching?
Tejada going to play 3B? He is a defensive liability for the most part but obviously this improves our offense. Pence/Berkman/Lee/Tejada is a pretty damn good 1,2,3,4 punch. For those folks saying his power numbers have declined, so what. He still hits for decent average, gets on base, and can still drive in plenty of runs especially with the help he has around him now and I think being in MMP he will hit well.
We DESPERATELY need some more help in the starting rotation though. I wasn't sold on Albers/Patton but atleast they could have been decent back of the rotation guys. It's a good thing we play in the worst division in all of baseball, and in the worst league. Hopefully we can score enough runs on nights when our starting pitching isn't there to still compete which is something we couldn't do last year.
Bottom line is, our starting pitching depth sucked ass last year and it still does, but we improved our offense and can still maybe make a move to get a bit of help in the rotation, and all we gave up was Patton, who most likely isn't going to be much more than a middle-backend rotation guy(watch him turn out to be the next Tom Glavine though).
Decent trade, let's see what else we do to help the rotation before I really know how to feel about this. We're still going to have to rebuild our farm system in the next few years to have any future at all, but I don't think we gave up anything that special in this deal. We shall see.
GO GET US SOME PITCHING WADE.

So I'm hearing we're just going to release Everett?
Crazy. I figure we could get SOMETHING for him. He's an excellent defensive SS. Package him with Burke and get a #5 starter or something.
I'm very very worried about our pitching. We CANNOT win relying on scoring 10 runs a game. We're going to be losing a ton of 10-8 games this year unless we get some help for the rotation. I have complete faith in Oswalt, but after that....eh.
I think Sampson is decent, Woody isn't good but he can eat up innings, Wandy is up and down, who else do we have? Backe? Nieve?
I think our bullpen has potential to be decent but we need something more in that rotation. It doesn't have to be Santana just someone who can consistantly give us some good starts and eat up innings.

imo we should bench everett, and let him come off the bench as a defensive replacement.

We already have Loretta and Blum though. Keeping Everett around just to play defense in the late innings seems pointless to me.
Maybe we should trade Wig/Burke/Everett for some pitching, whatever average pitcher we can get, and start Loretta at 3rd.
Sad thing is, no matter how decent we MIGHT be next year or 2(if we win 75 games I'd be shocked as hell), we are going to TERRIBLE after that because we have absolutely no farm system at all, and once Berkman/Oswalt/Lee/Tejada are washed up(which won't be that long) we're going to really struggle.
Not that the guys we gave up were going to make a difference then anyways, I don't think they're that special, but just in general...I'm concerned about the future of this team, beyond the next 2 years.
And honestly, like I said, I think we'll score some more runs and maybe be more fun to watch, and in our terrible division/league we can be somewhat competitive, but I don't see us sniffing the playoffs anyways because we have one of the worst rotations in all of baseball.

we need to get prior, and lieber, and clement to finish our rotation
How far we've fallen...
May as well though, take a risk on them. Are they all FA's? I wouldn't overspend on any of them because of their obvious flaws but if we could get them(even 1-2 of them) for cheap why the hell not. I'd probably go for Lieber before the other 2 though.
Maybe we could look at Livan Hernandez and Freddy Garcia too. Livan is an inning-eating machine.
