Stearns and Attanasio really on the defensive today.

Attanasio: "you'll have to talk to David about that". Lol

My gut after listening to a few interviews leads me to believe there’s more information from the team and clubhouse we aren’t privy to. Something doesn’t smell right.

Overall I think Attanasio has been a pretty good owner. Given no salary cap and a small market team with limited revenue I doubt there are many who would buy the team and increase payroll $50-$100 million a year.

He did seem surprised at the backlash, from the fans and players. First place team trades all star 1.5 years before free agency for a seemingly sub par return... The abysmal sweep by the Pirates certainly added fuel.

I actually believe Mark A when he says the deals were up to the Stearns and staff. If anything I'm inclined to believe he'd want to be in on a splashy move.

No way Stearns makes that move without Mark signing off. He can try to pin it on his front office, but they do ultimately report to him.

That being said, I'd prefer to know that this was Stearns driven and not Mark driven.

Hader will have a hefty salary next year. Could be they want to use that money on offense (and Cain's). And figured they'd get less for him this winter.

I think he said it in the interview. He has never vetoed a move Stearns has made. He gave it the go ahead because Stearns wanted to do it.

He's never vetoed a move (he says) but aren't there moves he's pushed for, like the Kyle Lohse abysmal signing? I thought I remembered something about that one, maybe not.

Suppan as well. He had a big hard on for him. That was an awful contract at the time.

To be fair he specifically said he's never vetoed anything Stearns wanted to do, he never said anything about pushing for specific moves or when Melvin was the GM

Right. He was implying he is hands off. But he's not.

Right, he was. And that was part of his point in the interview, that at one time he was too hands on and those moves sucked. So, he was saying now I’m more hands off and I’m still being criticized.

So did he technically sign off on this? Yes, but I think his point was he’s learned to let his baseball people have control, like Harlan did with Wolf.

I have no problem with him signing off on major moves. Every owner does it.

I wish we knew what was going to happen with Stearns. We know he can leave after this season if we win the WS or after 2023 if we don't. I don't want a lame duck making decisions that will affect the team after he's gone. I'm also curious what the dynamic is between Stearns and Arnold and why Arnold doesn't talk to the media about transactions since he is the GM. Maybe I missed it, maybe Arnold did talk.

I think the issue for a lot of fans is not that they think Mark told Stearns to trade Hader now. Rather, it's that Mark has given Stearns what they see is a tight budget to work with, which is somewhat flexible year-by-year but overall pretty set. It'd be one thing if we traded Hader to the Yankees and there weren't smaller market clubs spending a lot. But we traded Hader to the Padres, another NL contender! And next day the Padres got Soto AND Bell, to go with the high-salary superstar guys they already have. There was enough talk about Bell to the Brewers; even if it wasn't a perfect fit, getting Bell would have at least shown we're trying to add. Again, it's not Mark telling Stearns to cut salary even though they're in first place. It's that the team got worse for this year rather than better, all because Mark is, overall, unwilling to spend money. The Padres are a sharp contrast right now, making Brewer fans feel that much worse.

Willing to sign Ashby long term but not Hader. Getting pretty much nothing for Hader sucks.

Those two things were not remotely similar though. Ashby had a lot of arbitration years, Hader did not. Not comparable at all.

Ashby will make over the next 5 years less that what Hader will make each year of his next contract. And years 6-7 are team options.
