Arizona Fall League and Winter Ball updates.

Post#1 » by NYman15 » Tue Oct 4, 2011 4:14 pm

The Arizona Fall League opens play Tuesday, with St. Lucie skipper Pedro Lopez managing the Mets contingent. Their Peoria Javelinas squad also includes prospects from the Brewers, Cardinals, Mariners and Padres.

The Mets' participants:

Robert Carson, lhp
Collin McHugh, rhp
Erik Turgeon, rhp
Taylor Whitenton, rhp
Juan Centeno, c
Wilfredo Tovar, 2b
Jefry Marte, 3b
Juan Lagares, of

I'll be updating this thread throughout the winter and offseason with updates on how some of Mets prospects are doing while playing in either the Arizona Fall League or winter ball leagues. A lot of these prospects will have to be protected this winter and be put on the 40 man roster or else they could be selected in the Rule V Draft and join another team. So, the Mets brass is going to want to get one more look at these guys while playing against tough competition and see if they should be protected. Lets see how they do.

The game is still going on but,
Colin McHugh gave up 3 runs in 2 innings.
Robert Carson gave up 1 run in 1.1 innings striking out 1 and was hitting 94mph on the gun. He's only 22 and a lefty. He has potential. Even if he doesn't make it as a starter, he still can be a very good lefty out of he bullpen.
Taylor Whitenton went 1.1 scoreless innings walking 2 and striking out 2. He is an interesting guy. He doesn't have great stuff, but he lead the SAL in ERA last year.

Tovar is 0-4 as well.

Here's a recap of the 1st game and the writer goes over Robert Carson's outing.

"The pitch-fx star of the day was Robert Carson who sat 92-95 with his fastball and hit 96 once. He threw 63% of his pitches for strikes (22 of 34). The velocity readings on his change-up (82-86) and slider (81-91) seem a little inconsistent, so I wonder if 1. he really was that erratic, or 2. pitch-fx was misclassifying his pitches. Carson: 1.1, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K"

Mets prospect RHP Colin McHugh wrote about his 1st day in the AFL and his 1st start there. He really had a great 2nd half this year in AA and really put himself on the map. He's gonna be a guy to watch next year.

"The dry air had parched my lips. It’s a different kind of heat out here. Different from the wet Atlanta air I’m used to. Weatherman said we were in for a dust storm, mixed with some rain. Sounded kinda eerie if you ask me. Looking past the left center wall, the flags were stiff, blowing the wrong direction (if you’re a pitcher). …

… This is a test. I have never in my baseball career faced hitters consistently as good or polished as I will out here. It’s my protection year, so it is somewhat of an audition for my organization’s 40 man roster. I will be tested on all facets of the game, and stretched beyond my previous innings total for a season.. However, I don’t look at my opportunity here as an exam. I look at this next 6 weeks as a privilege.

I have been given the privilege to play alongside and against some of the game’s best rising stars and the opportunity to count myself among them. Not everyone gets this chance. Very few, in fact. I would count it a tragedy to spend my time out here fretting over the harsh conditions and low pay. This season is not one to be met with anxiety but rather excitement!

So there I stood, chapped lips bent upwards in a smile. Who would have thought on April 1 that I would be pitching here on Oct. 4? Not many."

Game is still going on, but so far the only 2 Mets that have played are Jefry Marte, who is very young and one of the youngest guys there, and Juan Lagares.
Marte is 1-3 so far.
Lagares is 2-5 so far.

"Yesterday, Juan Lagares and Jefry Marte made their Arizona Fall League debuts. RF Lagares just continued his strong work from the regular season, when he hit a combined .349/.383/.500 between advanced-A and AA, going 2-6 with two strikeouts.

3B Marte (pictured) was 1-for-3 with two walks, and a strikeout. Marte was significantly better in the first half of the 2011 season when he hit .283/.357/.402 than in the second when he slipped to .210/.263/.284. It’s not all batting average: his first half isolated slugging percentage was .119 while it slipped to .074 in the second half. Also, he walked at a 9.4% clip in the first half and 5.6% in the second half. He had eight multi-walk games in 2011, but just one in the second half. What happened? Can he regain his first-half form in the AFL?

You know, the way he hit in the first half moves him closer to double-A readiness than I thought."

Both these guys are very talented hitters and both are guys to watch next year.

Here is todays box score.
Lagares went 2-4 with a HR a SB and played CF.
Marte went 2-5 with a SB playing 1st base.
Carson threw 2 scoreless innings.
http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp ... n_msswin_1

I think Lagares can play CF in the future. He has a strong arm and has good speed. I hope we see him play more CF next year as well. And he continues to hit well. He showed some good pop as well as the year went on. And he stole a base today.

Marte, despite being one of the youngest guys out there, is holding his own.

And good to see Carson have a solid outing after having a couple of rough first few outings.

Here is article that's updating how Juan Lagares and Jefry Marte are doing in the Arizona Fall League. Both have started very strong. Lagares has had an amazing year. He finished the year batting over .370 in AA. He's still young and can play all 3 outfield positions. And Jefry Marte is one of the youngest guys out there in the AFL and he's performing very well.

Here's an update on some of the Mets who are playing the Venezuelan league. Johan Santana was thought to possibly get some innings in won't. He's been shut down for the winter and then he'll head to ST and hopefully be ready to start next year. Main guy to watch the Venezuelan league is Mets prospect Wilmer Flores who is one of their best hitting prospects.

"As part of an 8-7 loss in Surprise Monday, Jefry Marte homered for the second straight game. The 20-year old is now hitting a clean .300/.405/.533 in nine games.

The big news, and I missed this last week, is that Marte’s started playing first basebase. Marte had committed 121 errors in 361 games at third in the minor leagues, but was better in 2011 with just 28 in 131 games. The odd thing was that I thought he’d improved defensively this year. I saw him for only one game, but he made a slick spinning play after a short-hop pick that was at least as good, and probably better, than any I’d seen from him in 2010."
