Basak gets first callup
By cjennings @ 2:43 PM :: 18 Views :: 1 Comments :: :: Transactions
Just heard utility man Chris Basak was called up from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. It's the first major league call-up for Basak. He's the "flexibility" player called up to replace Matt DeSalvo, who was sent back to Triple-A.

In a more surprising move, the Yankees also called up left-hander Sean Henn and optioned Kevin Thompson back to the minors. Apparently the Yankees want a long man tonight behind Tyler Clippard, and Chris Britton was used up last night.

Don't be surprised to see Britton stick for a while. His performance Monday seems to have earned him a few much-deserved days in the big leagues, and he's good enough that he might never come back. Haven't talked to Thompson, but the move has to be disappointing, especially since this call-up seemed to be one when he might actually get a chance to play with Damon hurting.

Steven White and Runelvys Hernandez have already joined the team in Buffalo. Hernandez, signed as a free agent after being released from Pawtucket, is scheduled to start Thursday. White, promoted from Tampa after coming back from a shoulder injury, is Saturday's scheduled starter.

Pitching coach Dave Eiland said Steven Jackson and Eric Junge have been assigned to the bullpen.

Remember, though, that there will be more moves in the next few days.

Thompson is taking Basak's place on the roster, and Lavigne is taking Henn's spot. That means, changes will have to be made to add Hernandez, White and DeSalvo. Plus, the Yankees could add another position player in the next few days to get to a full four-man bench.

Farm director Mark Newman said the team won't announce any moves until Hernandez and the rest are actually added to the roster, so don't expect much until Thursday.

Stretched out: Sean Henn appeared in 16 games for the Yankees in April and May and only three times pitched more than one inning.

But when he was optioned back to Scranton on May 15, he was made a starter. He didn't understand it then, but now he does.

Henn was recalled yesterday and will serve as a long reliever.

"I wasn't happy when they first told me, but I got through it," said Henn, who was 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA at Scranton. "They just said do it. I asked why; they said just do it. I had no idea what was going on."

The Yankees have wanted a long reliever all season. Henn could fill that role.

"I like him out of the bullpen, I really do. He can come in and strike somebody out," Torre said.

I really don't like why he asked, "why?" when he was told to do something. Its not like he was the second coming of Billy Wagner(comparison because they are both lefthanded) out there in our bullpen.
