Yankees Likely to Sign Brian Roberts

Per Ken Rosanthal of FOX Sports.

Why waste your time signing a 36 year old guy who hasn't played more than 77 games in a full season since 2009?

i mean if this dude can ever stay healthy it could be a good deal. The other option would be Brandon Phillips and he is declining fast SO they don't want to pick up his contract. With nobody on the market to play 2b, there really isn't anybody else to get.

1 yr low cost contract with incentives better be the deal.

Not really a valid excuse to sign a guy that just can't stay healthy, when he's guaranteed to miss more than half the season.

It's not an excuse, Cash-man has been picking up old players off the scrap heap for 3-5 yrs now, haven't you noticed the pattern? This shouldn't be surprising.........I mean Chavez was done but came back and rehabilitated his career as a Yankee, these are the low risk medium reward deals Cash has been doing for a while. Not every player he signs gets XX years and XXXX money, the cheap guys are just as necessary.

I understand all that. I don't mind picking up aging veterans that can still contribute. I'm just not a fan of signing a guy that's practically guaranteed to miss more than half a season. Anyone that thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. He'll turn out to be more like Youkilis than Chavez.

This better not be one of those moves where they could've just sat still and have Brendan Ryan backup both 2nd and SS. And so with this signing, here are the hitters:

C Brian McCann
1B Mark Teixiera
2B Brian Roberts
3B Kelly Johnson
SS Derek Jeter
LF Alfonso Soriano
CF Jacoby Ellsbury
RF Carlos Beltran

C Francisco Cervelli
IF Brendan Ryan
OF Brett Gardner
OF Ichiro Suzuki
OF Vernon Wells

That's 13 so far, 14 if you include A-Rod

Well it looks like the $189m limit has well and truly been blown out of the water. Surely they must have had a pretty good idea that this was going to happen, so I don't see why they went for a old and cheap one-year filler instead of going to 4 years with a significantly younger and more productive guy like Infante. Trying to fit under $189m is the only reason I can think of why a team with the financial assets of the Yankees, and who are prepared to spend (see the other deals signed so far this off-season), would pick up the worse option over a superior option when the main difference is money.
