The Rangers remain steadfastly anti-arbitration.
On Friday, they ran their streak of avoiding the potentially acrimonious hearing process to eight years when they signed catcher Gerald Laird to a one-year, $1.6 million deal. The signing came just hours before the club would have had to exchange contract figures with agent Scott Boras.
The Rangers had already signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to a $1.8 million deal Wednesday and first baseman Ben Broussard to a $3.85 million deal this month. The Rangers have not gone to a hearing with a player since they faced off against Lee Stevens in 2000.
It was the first year of eligibility for Laird, who started the 2007 season as the Rangers' starting catcher. After a poor offensive season, however, he will go to spring training battling with Jarrod Saltalamacchia for the job. If Laird loses, it's possible he could be traded before the end of spring training.
