There is no good reason not to use your best pitcher in one of the first two games of a double knockout tourney and risk elimination like that. It's basic stuff. Considering he's started Shawn Hill today, it appears he's actually learned from that experience.
He did not know he would have to qualify this time and no one thought we would lose to Italy.
It's a single baseball game and the Italian team was full of professional baseball players (including several former and current MLBers). What happened was in no way surprising and Whitt was foolish for underrating his opponent.
