Hmm. High schooler going under slot. Vanderbilt commit. Hope we have budgeted for this.

We should have plenty of money to work with, with the extra picks. But even with the Vandy commit I'd be a little surprised if he wasn't signable.

Perhaps not surprising that the Yankees are the team comfortable with taking Spencer Jones, given Aaron Judge.

He might get a shade higher, but yeah. Turning down $3m+ benefits agents (ehrm, advisors) and no one else. Get that money, increase your likelihood of reaching the majors (and thus arb/FA) at a younger age.

Also worth noting: Barriera skipped his HS postseason to ensure that he was healthy going into the draft. Which got him some negative press (because hurr durr where's his competitiveness), but unlikely to be the action of a player whose first instinct is to go to college.

Also just plain smart, because potentially losing millions to pitch in the Florida high school playoffs is just braindead.

Next pitcher off the board was also to Vanderbilt. Was referenced as a “tough sign”. No talk about that for Christopher walnuts.

Edit: Brandon Walnuts would be a great nickname. Or just Walnuts.. :dontknow:

Every high school pitcher is a Vandy commit. One year, all of those kids will actually go to Vandy, and they'll have one hell of a juggling act on their hands.

Edit: getting the sense he's signing.

I'm being told that JR Ritchie is not, in fact, the son of JR Richard.

Five bucks says the Orioles take Brock Porter.

Edit: or Rays, given that the O's passed on him.

I don't think there's any mystery as to why Jackson Cox doesn't abbreviate his given name. I can guarantee there isn't anything a drunken crowd can yell at him that exceeds what he's heard from classmates since the age of 10.

Good friend named Jackson. Occasionally makes the karate kid reference…

Jacks on, Jacks…
