Having actually guessed our first pick, I'm going to say that we take Drew Thorpe (if he isn't taken in the next couple picks). Fits another profile that we like: good secondary stuff and plus command, tall starter for whom everything could play up if he adds a bit of velo.

Update: I am not a wizard.

Kasevich is another guy who fits a profile that we like: a bat speed/bat control darling. Incredibly low-K; Fangraphs had him with the highest future hit tool in the draft. Little power to date. Probably a 3B in the pros, maybe 2B?

Seems thoroughly reasonable to me.

That’s a bad leak. Could potentially compromise things.

Should be fine. Teams are unlikely to burn a pick at this point without having a very good sense of a player's number, especially with a significantly overslot ask, so if this is true (I have no idea) the odds are pretty good that he reaches us. Longenhagen was mentioning that it's widely believed that the Rays have a deal with Brock Porter, which is likely why they went underslot with 29.

i first thought matt holliday's son getting drafted made me feel old, and then brendan ryan took the podium to announce the cards' last pick. goddammit.

Plouffe had the same effect on me. Not just because he's announcing picks, but in looking him up on B-R, I realized that he's younger than me.

Probably best that Dayton Moore's kid didn't get drafted by the Rockies. It would have been really awkward if he had to be teammates with Jack Cox given, well, y'know.

And it was indeed Tucker Toman.

Book on Tucker Toman: switch-hitter with massive batspeed, some contact risk but good power. Position is...kinda unknown. Decent chance he's a 1B/corner OF. Might be able to hack 2B. We announced him as a SS because everyone is a SS.

78th pick is Cade Doughty. Interestingly, probably not a seriously underslot player, he was a ~2nd round projection as a college junior. Has some power, hit tool has some questions and position seems to be unknown, not a good fielder from what I can find.

Well, that was a very aggressive first day of the draft. Not quite AA drafting every single high school pitcher in America, but pretty damned aggressive nonetheless. I have no doubt that we're confident on the numbers, because you don't make those choices without being very confident.

I'm guessing that we're going to see a few college senior relievers tomorrow, though.
