Steve Delabar Cut: 2015

Post#1 » by North_of_Border » Thu Mar 26, 2015 9:35 pm

Heres a headliner. Toronto Blue Jays who came into spring training with all sorts of questions on the bullpen just cut veteran rebounding RP Steve Delabar.

Its not that Delabar was bad. He could pitch for the Jays on opening day. But its more to do with Jays going young. Castro basically takes over late game RHP role which Delabar had..... And now Osuna is a contender for Delabar's roster spot.

I think this is a mistake. Not only does it stunt the growth of a future SP like Osuna but also takes a veteran who was solid in a rebound start.

Delabar was not happy. If he demands a trade. Jays dont have too much proven depth in the spot. Atleast not to his level.

AA knows its now or never for him. So he is trying to showcase his drafting skills. Updating his Resume in other words. Hopefully Jays dont suffer as a result.

I was going to ask re: this roster move and how much it has to do with Drabek and Redmond being out of options? For instance if Kyle struggles to start the season (assuming he or player x makes the bullpen ahead of Delabar) it means out of option players would have to be traded or waived and they don't want to do that without having Steve in the minors as depth if and/or when they have to make a subsequent move due to inevitable injuries during the regular season?

In other words, depth + role definition...with the development of Castro (right handed power arm much like Steve) the domino effect would mean for Delabar to stay in the pen he would have to serve a long relief role, when they have guys like Kyle and Todd who are better suited to that less appealing role. Not to mention, with Steve's injury history the Blue Jays might not want to stretch him out but instead keep in ready for a similar setup/hold role upon his return.

Maybe they want to see which one of Drabek or Redmond is worth keeping. Give them a month, keep the better one, and then call up Delabar. But it would have made a lot more sense to start somebody like Castro or Osuna in the minors, than to do it to Delabar. At least for those two youngsters, keeping them down for a month or two gives you an extra year of control and possibly delays the arb clock.

It also keeps them off the 40-man, thus preventing us from starting to burn options. That's the part that really scares me...once that clock is ticking, they have a fairly short window in which to become fixtures at the major league level. Chopping a year off of that means that they need to be fully formed in their early 20s, with a starter-to-reliever-to-starter conversion thrown into the mix for good measure.

Still holding out some hope that the next few days will result in a team with an April 1st roster crunch putting one or more of AA's mancrushes on the market, but it's rapidly dimming.

Not sure if the addition of Drabek will add any value to Navarro.

Sox stole Drabek but Jays got em back. AA swiped some heavy hitting 26 year old, who the Sox had to expose to make room for Drabek.

The guy sucked in 17 MLB games last season. But hit .293 with 30 HRs, 86 rbi and 38 doubles in the minors last season.

Seams like a fair trade
