Phew. Great managing from Gibbons to still use Sanchez in the 8th today after struggling in the 7th. Not sure we get through that one if he doesn't.

But why not bunt. Just tell Sanchez to bunt but don't run to 1st if you are worried about him pulling something. I completely share his fear of the bullpen.

Cecil will be back tomorrow (likely) and Morales is on his way at least. I'm excited to have Morales to pitch to lefties. Hopefully Cecil is actually healthy and not coming back because the bullpen sucks.

Exactly. I'm not talking about his decision to let Sanchez stay in; it has to do with wasting an out by not even attempting to sacrifice and ultimately wasting an inning in which the first two batters reached. If Sanchez bunted, it would be 5-1 right now.

Just because you decide to bunt doesn't mean it automatically works...

Well, obviously not, but it sure as heck gives you a much better chance than just standing there and hoping for a walk.

For sure. I'm just tired of people making it seem like every bunt has a 100% success rate.

Gibbons agrees.

I had no problem with the no-bunt call, or leaving Sanchez in for that at-bat and the bottom half of the inning. The bullpen has to do its job, and with a 5-1 lead going into the ninth, someone other than Osuna (who had already pitched in the wee hours of the morning today) has to be good enough to come into the game. But this pen sucks. Osuna had to pitch even though he doesn't handle non-save situations well. Now he won't be available for sure Monday against Cleveland. Hopefully Cecil and Morales joining the team in the next few days will stabilize a bad situation.
