‘Juan Soto trade’: What Pirates want in Bryan Reynolds deal - New York Post

One rival executive complained the Pirates are looking for a “Juan Soto trade” for Bryan Reynolds, who seeks a way out of Pittsburgh.

Reynolds does have three years to go in his contract, whereas Soto had 2 1/2, and Reynolds obviously makes much less money. But Soto is an elite player.
Consider that the Pirates offered Reynolds about $76 million, while the Nationals offered Soto $440 million.

Another exec predicts Reynolds will stay now, based on the asking price, but holds hope for a deadline deal.

The belief is that the Pirates seek at least three to four top prospects (the Nationals got five for Soto).
From the Yankees, who would be interested, that would likely mean multiple players from the top group that includes Oswald Peraza, Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez.

Rbot umps moving into all AAA ballparks this season. The last para is particularly interesting for the 2023 Jays. MLB wants to lower the top of the strike zone, so high fastball pitchers might struggle a bit more while batters who have trouble with high fast ones can benefit, if they are disciplined. For a good low ball hitter who also hit a lot into the shift, these changes ought to be great news.

At the winter meetings, MLB general managers were also briefed on the ongoing efforts to shape the strike zone in a way that is more conducive for action. In the season ahead, there will be more focus on lowering the top of the strike zone -- an area in which many pitchers have contributed to the record rate of strikeouts -- and calling strikes within the 17-inch horizontal plane above home plate.

Salary Arbitration | Glossary | MLB.com

Salary Arbitration

Definition

Players who have three or more years of Major League service but less than six years of Major League service become eligible for salary arbitration if they do not already have a contract for the next season. Players who have less than three but more than two years of service time can also become arbitration eligible if they meet certain criteria; these are known as "Super Two" players. Players and clubs negotiate over salaries, primarily based on comparable players who have signed contracts in recent seasons. A player's salary can indeed be reduced in arbitration -- with 20 percent being the maximum amount by which a salary can be cut.

If the club and player have not agreed on a salary by a deadline (typically in mid-January), the club and player must exchange salary figures for the upcoming season. After the figures are exchanged, a hearing is scheduled (typically in February). If no one-year or multi-year settlement can be reached by the hearing date, the case is brought before a panel of arbitrators. After hearing arguments from both sides, the panel selects either the salary figure of either the player or the club (but not one in between) as the player's salary for the upcoming season.

The week prior to the exchange of arbitration figures is when the vast majority of arbitration cases are avoided, either by agreeing to a one- or multi-year contract. Multi-year deals, in these instances, serve as a means to avoid arbitration for each season that is covered under the new contract.

Once a player becomes eligible for salary arbitration, he is eligible each offseason (assuming he is tendered a contract) until he reaches six years of Major League service. At that point, the player becomes eligible for free agency.

**** Aroldis Chapman. Hasn't been particularly good the last two years, and that doesn't even get into the whole "choking his girlfriend and then firing eight gunshots into the wall of his garage to intimidate her" thing.

A rare prime-for-prime deal. Miami had a bunch of starters, and they gain a year of team control. Arraez is a fascinating player in this era, a 1B/DH with no power, but a K/BB ratio that makes Kirk look like a hacker. Kinda works for both teams.
