Jim Riggleman Resigns as Nats Manager

Awful. Over a contract dispute, apparently b/c his team has won 11 out of their last 12, it means he should get a new contract.

That Nats job is going to be a good job for someone.

You can't make this stuff up.

Just got back from the ballpark. Most optimistic Nats fans have EVER been save for flashes in 2005, and now its all in jeopardy.

F the Nats and really, F Riggleman, even if its good for his career. Loyalties should run deeper, especially to his ballclub when he has FINALLY had some success.

This town is cursed. I'm from Wisconsin, but after 20 years of living here, this was the first DC sports team I was starting to enjoy save for occasionally the Capitals.

Unbelievable.

Probably the dumbest move I've ever seen a coach or manager make. It's like Phil Jackson would quit after winning 3 straight titles or something, or Belichick quitting after winning back to back Super Bowls. I'm on the Nats side of this one, they don't have to pick up his option in late June, if I'm not mistaken they have until the end of the year. Maybe Rizzo wanted to see how this team fared down the stretch before keeping Riggs?

And Riggleman...he should fire his agent, it's probably cost him a managerial job for the forseeable future.

I really take the other side.

Riggleman was doing well enough to have warranted the one year option. One freaking year.

Actually, I hate Rizzo right now.

I don't care if it was only a matter of 600k. If the management doesn't want to give you the one year option, then you don't get it. Big **** deal. You never quit on your players like this.

Can't agree, Pine, although not really high on him either right now.

Riggleman was known as a classy, nice guy. This is really a bad move--it very well might have cost him a bit of that reputation.

Guy hasn't even earned it here, either. Not like he's gotten the team to produce overly above expectations except for really, now. AND ITS NOT EVEN HALF WAY THROUGH THE SEASON YET!!!!

That was a surprising outcome to say the least.

Contracts are contracts.......but geez

JMO, but I think that was a dumb move.....and probably a damaging one to boot

Was reading Buster Olney's twitter page and he talked I guess to a front office guy and said he wouldn't hire Riggs to be a AA or AAA manager. Riggs cost himself some money.

Boswell has an excellent article on all of this in today's Post. Well worth a read.

As usual.

Hardball Talk gets it right, also. "If the Nats continue to win, well he wasn't that important. If they lose, he quit the team and sent them into a tailspin."

Hard to argue. And hard to see how he helped himself.

I will say, if he was getting treated that poorly by management, good for him. Sometimes its worth it to tell your boss to go f themselves, even at the expense of your career.

I understand the whole thing about not wanting go year to year but he left at least 300K on the table this year and if they finished out very well this season would have had real power in renogotiating his contract to alot more reasonable amount next season and after. It makes no sense and I like what Werth said for his team. That we are the ones doing it. Nothing else to say. You as ball players play the game and if your manager quits on you when you are doing good. You know what your doing just keep doing it.

Yeah I can't see how Riggleman did himself any favors by resigning. If the Nats had done well, he would have gotten a good deal from some team next season. The team would have to be a total disaster for him to be worse off than he is now.

His option would have gotten picked up if the Nats won say...78-79 ball games. He just didn't have the patience. Bruce Bochy won the World Series on a 1 year contract.
