Dodgers, Kershaw Agree on 7-yr/$215 Million Deal

Post#1 » by Da Schwab » Wed Jan 15, 2014 9:29 pm

Per ESPN

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/stor ... 15-million

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw have agreed on a seven-year, $215 million deal, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com.

Kershaw has an out clause after five years.

It is the richest deal in Major League Baseball history for a pitcher, eclipsing the seven-year, $180 million deal Detroit gave Justin Verlander last winter.

But if ever a player deserved a contract such as this, it is the 25-year old Kershaw, who has won two of the last three National League Cy Young Awards and a Roberto Clemente award for his charitable work.

I never thought I would ever say this about a $30 mil/year deal, let alone one for seven years, but this makes total and complete sense.

interesting enough.

the Dodgers seem like they would have given him anything. A lifetime deal or a 10 year deal etc. etc.
so it seems like this is what Kershaw wanted - 7 years with an opt out clause after the 5th.

maybe he wants to be courted as an FA.
maybe he'd take the pressure of a record setting deal on the money end but didn't want the pressure of the 1st lifetime deal.

He's a monster but it's always worrisome giving a Pitcher long term monster deals. All it takes is one shoulder injury...

He is definitely deserving though.

so, then i guess my next question is...

does this change the game?
will another player get Kershaw money?

David Price will be an FA soon.
What about Matt Harvey and Strassburg? Does their TJS history already block them from seeing Kershaw money eventually?
Does Mike Trout automatically have a claim to making over 30.7 Ms because he's an everyday player?

He gains security and the option to opt out and secure a huge deal that will go well into his late 30's.

proof?

dude had 3 awesome starts in this postseason with only 1 WIN to show for it.
the last game he was obviously gassed from Mattingly burning him the hell out over the season and pitching him on short rest the series before....he was throwing beach balls up there.
