Three 100-win teams this season

Two of them got swept in the Divisional Round.

The third, the 104-win Braves with gaudy batting stats during the regular season, are down 2-1 to the Phillies.

Speaking of gaudy stats, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman both had MVP-level seasons.

They were a combined 1-21 against the Diamondbacks in a 3-game sweep.

Diamondbacks won 84 games and have a couple of good starters but their pitching was ranked 20th in the MLB.

Texas was ranked 18th in pitching and shut down the Orioles, ranked #10 in hitting.

Maybe the regular season in baseball is even more meaningless than in the NBA.

The top 5 teams overall lost in their first round of play, with Tampa Bay and Milwaukee getting swept in the wildcard round.

Yeah now they're blaming the playoffs format, the top teams get a week bye while the winners of the WC round come in hot and the teams with bye can't warm out fast enough.

So maybe the Division round should be best of 7, some people are saying.

But I think the teams which won 100 games had a lot of depth, especially a team like the Dodgers which win 100 games routinely.

Whereas most teams are going to play a lot of lower talented players throughout the season, to give players rest or players get injured and the replacements aren't good enough to produce.

But the top two starters and maybe the top 3 hitters on all playoffs teams are more comparable and then you have some players getting uncharacteristically hot and carry their teams.

So the teams with best records during the regular season don't necessarily have as big of an advantage over their opponents as their respective records would suggest.

I don’t blame the layoffs, upsets have always happened in baseball, the Braves beating the Dodgers two years ago, the Phillies adding Cy Young Halladay to team that had already made last two WS and losing to random Giants team, etc. The Phillies have a better team than their record, Harper, Nola and Turner all had average seasons for them but are established talents.

NFL, MLB and NHL all like the anyone can win once they’re in the playoffs format, it’s more fun for the casuals.
