I'm not sure of the details...

But I remember the A's sent Jeremy Bonderman, Franklyn German, and cash to the Tigers for Ted Lilly and two minor leaguers.

*sigh* how good would Bonderman make our rotation now?

New York Yankees traded Ted Lilly with Jason Arnold (minors) and John-Ford Griffin to the Oakland Athletics. The Oakland Athletics sent a player to be named later, Carlos Pena, and Franklyn German to the Detroit Tigers. The Detroit Tigers sent Jeff Weaver to the New York Yankees. The Detroit Tigers sent cash to the Oakland Athletics. The Oakland Athletics sent Jeremy Bonderman (August 22, 2002) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

It would have been fine if you just kept Lilly.....

Jermaine Dye: July 25, 2001: Traded by the Kansas City Royals to the Colorado Rockies for Neifi Perez. July 25, 2001: Traded by the Colorado Rockies to the Oakland Athletics for Todd Belitz, Mario Encarnacion, and Jose Ortiz.

The Liriano trade takes the cake if he can rebound at all to where he was last year.

Cubs trading Hee-Sop Choi to the Marlins for Derrek Lee worked out pretty well for the Cubs; once Lee got to Chicago he became one of the best hitters in the game, and Choi hasn't been in the bigs since 2005 (with LA) IIRC. He certainly was never the same after he had that collision and subsequent concussion.

Maybe they were returning a favor; the Cubs previously traded Dontrelle Willis for Matt Clement and Antonio Alfonseca. :dontknow:

Marte for Renteria has worked out ok, but I like Soriano for Ramirez better.

Pittsburgh plugged the Cubs' gaping holes at third base (with Aramis Ramirez) and center field (with Kenny Lofton) for the low, low price of Jose Hernandez, Triple-A righthander Matt Bruback and a player to be named later. The Pirates also gave up a small amount of cash.

Another good one, but that one was definitely of the "fire sale" variety.

Didn't we also get Simon from Pittsburgh in that deal as well? He was decent for the one year he was with us.

Colon won a Cy Young after that trade....if Montreal kept him it wouldn't have been so bad.

Every trade with Pittsburgh should be labled as lopsided. Oliver Perez for Roberto Hernandez and Xavier Nady, then letting Hernandez go

The other players coming to the Brewers were Junior Spivey, Chad Moeller and Jorge De la Rosa.

Lyle Overbay was turned into Gabe Gross, Dave Bush and Zach Jackson.

No... Lilly was and has been a mediocre pitcher all his career, while we sent a future ace in Bonderman and a good reliever in German to acquire Lilly... who we promptly let walk.

Estaben Loiaza to the Jays for Micheal Young. Loaiza was a rental and didn't even pitch well during that time.

But the Twins/Giants trade still wins.

Twins-Giants trade is probably the most lopsided in the last 25 years if Liriano comes back strong.

Other trades in the past 5-10 years:

-D-Rays get Kevin Stocker, Phils get Bobby Abreu (1997)

-Marlins select Johan Santana in the '99 "Rule 5" Draft, then trade him to the Twins for Jared Camp (1999)

-Mariners trade Randy Johnson to the Astros for Carlos Guillen and Freddy Garcia (1998)

-This almost happened: Phillies get Kris Benson for Ryan Howard ('03 or '04?)

-Pedro Martinez from Montreal to Boston for Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. (1997)

-Ken Griffey Jr. from Seattle to Cincy for Mike Cameron, Brett Tomko, Antonio Perez, and Jake Meyer (1999)

-Sammy Sosa to Baltimore for Jerry Hairston Jr. and prospects (2005)

-2004: 4-team deal that landed the Red Sox: Orlando Cabrera, Doug Mientkiewicz and Dave Roberts (all instrumental in winning the '04 WS) while giving up a slumping Nomar Garciaparra

Just some more examples.
