It's a penalty by the letter of the law. It was technically the right call.
It didn't change the outcome of the play though, and if it had been let go, it's not egregious...there are more blatant penalties that are committed that are let go.
Yes, technically people that have a gripe with it are advocating for a penalty to be ignored, but at the same time, it's more the consistency of the refs that is being criticized here. What they choose to call and not call is the problem, not if it was actually a penalty or not. Again, the refs can call a penalty every single play if they really wanted to, but obviously they use their discretion. So choosing to call that hold in that moment, in that critical of a situation, was weird. I mean, Greg Olsen, who had no dog in this fight, and was a former offensive player himself, thought that was a super soft call and didn't have to be made. Mike Pereira a former official also thought that was a weird call.
What they choose to be a play on type situation and what they end up calling a penalty was too inconsistent for my taste, and looks like for a lot of people's tastes.
