I don't know, loss of $11 million seems pretty steep.

Plus even when he returns next year, he will have lost some momentum in his career so maybe teams aren't willing to pay him as much as they otherwise would have if he played and had a good season again.

Betting on the sport and on the team youre involved with has maybe been the #1 rule that players cant do for probably close to a century (however long ago the Black Sox Scandal was). You just cant do it, doesnt matter if its for or against your team, you cant gamble on your team. And when you listen to players talk about this, they all say the same thing. The league basically bashes it in their heads whenever they have the chance, you cant gamble on your team.

Again do I personally think its that big of a deal that he bet on his team to win? Not really. But even I know without being a professional athlete that, that is a massive taboo. There is no proof at all that Pete Rose ever bet on his team to lose, the only proof is he bet on his team. Pete Roes is one of the best baseball players of all time and the dude has been banned and shunned from the MLB for over 30 years now.

Now you add in the NFL having a public relationship with sports gambling sites. Ya that taboo is even much stronger of a taboo now. That is why Im surprised that it was only 1 year.

It's that the suspensions for other, far worse things, are typically way too low.

no kidding, why would any professional athlete consider doing this? did they learn nothing from pete rose? i'd be surprised if there isn't some seminar on day one for rookies, in every league, where they just tell you to don't ever bet on the game!
