Absolutely.

So how does this benefit the Broncos to take on that dead money?

Does it give them salary cap relief in the next couple of seasons or just avoid paying Wilson more money?

It's not like the team is ready to compete so they just need to get a new QB in there ASAP.

They don't have a franchise QB prospect either, who would benefit from snaps the next couple of seasons.

Maybe they just wanted to punish Wilson by cutting him for not waiving his salary guarantees and thus, maybe wasting at least a season of his remaining career.

But he could go to a team like Steelers, who might be in a better position to get to the playoffs with some competent QB play.

The team saves $37m by releasing him now.

He still gets that money right? Or has he gotten all his guaranteed money in just two seasons?

People were saying that if another team signed him, they'd only owe him the minimum because the Broncos would still have to pay them, which sounded like he still had guaranteed money due to him.

I thought the guaranteed money on the contract he signed just a couple of years ago was over $150 million or something like that.

He gets his guaranteed money. All of it. $160M. But a lot of that money has already been paid to him.

He's still going to count $85M against the cap going forward.

Meanwhile, the team saves $37M in cash in 2025.

This was a legacy damaging stint for Russ in Denver. Not a slam dunk HOFer anymore.

Well given that the Broncos made the trade, shaping up to be one of the worst trades in a long time, and then gave him one of the biggest contracts in history, maybe the team management and coaching has a lot to do with the poor results on the field.

I would assume all those people involved in making the trade and giving him the big extension are no longer in charge?

They might draft a good QB this year or next year and be fine.

Hard to believe Russ will ever play again tbh. The guy is completely washed.

I think that says it all tbh. They could have given it another shot since they’re paying him but they know he’s cooked.

He'll get another shot. He's going to be cheap for whoever signs him. Vegas or Atlanta is my prediction.

Hasn’t he always wanted to play in Vegas?

Yes, he would want Vegas. I'm pretty sure Ciara has ties to Atlanta iirc. So, I think he'll end up in one of those spots.

Interesting. Makes sense I forgot she had the Atlanta song…

Payton probably put his foot down, doesn't want to be tied to Russ, even though they don't have another guy to be their starter.
