I don’t get this chargers defense - you have samuels, Mack, bosa, James etc and they blow. I think it’s the cover 2 shell they run

Staley sucks, but nationally there is this perception that the Chargers are really talented underachievers. It’s not true, this roster really isn’t great.

Injuries have taken a toll on Joey Bosa, I don’t think he’s one of the best 10-15 pass rushers anymore. Mack is having a great year so he might be in that group, although his production tends to come in bursts. Tulipulotu looks promising but the rest of the defensive line sucks. Derwin James has really underperformed for two seasons now, he has not been a difference maker. The rest of the secondary just sucks. Michael Davis alternates good and terrible years and Samuel Jr. is okay but is an awful tackler.

On offense, Keenan Allen is still really good and Slater is good at LT (but hasn’t played to the level of his awesome rookie year). They lost Corey Linsley to a heart issue and the rest of the offensive line is mediocre to bad. Mike Williams has missed most of the year, Palmer is an okay 3rd receiver and Johnston has sucked. Most importantly, their receivers and TEs really don’t compliment each other well. Ekeler hasn’t looked good since his ankle injury and their other RBs are bad.

Overall, I think this roster is in the bottom half of the league in terms of talent and depth. It was basically the same last year too. Herbert hasn’t taken that last step from very good to elite tier IMO, but he’s elevated pretty lacking rosters to 9-8 and 10-7 the last two years.
