That is the perfect situation for Fields if you ask me. Fields is clearly now the Steelers future. Let him sit for a year behind Russ, learn the offense, and work on his mechanics. Steelers are killing it this off season.

Fields is a slow processor. It's why his ceiling is capped. He shares that in common with Russ. His value comes from his ability as a runner. I'm not sure Pittsburgh will pick up his 5th year option & stick with him long-term. Especially when he won't come cheap.

The Claypool trade was a steal cause they landed Joey Porter Jr. with the pick. If the pick da Bears received lands a player as impactful as Joey, then it would be even for both sides.

In terms of the players involved, Chase Claypool was MUCH more impactful as a rookie and beyond on the field than Fields ever had. He was so elite that Big Ben chose to end his last TD towards Chase over any other receiver so that mean something.

The ONLY reason Claypool has struggled in Chicago was because his QB sucked, simple as that. If Russ can stay healthy, their new backup will never play a down for the Steelers. I much rather have keep the pick if was the GM.

if fields butters his bread based on his athleticism then he probably isn't going to be terribly happy sitting for a year during his athletic prime

They should have just given up an unconditional 4th round pick for Fields and then evaluate him as a starter for the upcoming season before deciding to pick up his 5th year option or let him walk if he sucks. They must be targeting a QB in the draft like Bo Nix or Penix Jr, neither has the same dynamic upside as Fields.
