The huge miss was obviously Haliburton in 2020... but then also Maxey and Banes in 2020.
2022 it's Banchero, Chet, Murray and Jalen Williams look like four sure fire all-star type guys but two of those guys were picked one ahead of where we had picks so its not like Weaver missed on any Ivey still could be ok where he was drafted and Duren at worst is a backup C which is also fine for where he was drafted.

2020 was just a huge brick. Still owe a pick to the Knicks for that season as well. If we had one huge hit there everything is diff.
The other is all the possible trades that were rumored we didnt do. Obv the most known one was SGA+their high lotto pick for pick 1. That said who knows how many trade ups or downs we could done that made this team better.
Some people say you "never trade the 1 pick" but sometimes it has happened. Ainge made out trading from 1 to 3 turning Fultz into Tatum+. Webber was traded in the deal for Penny and picks that was a win.

Dropping down from #1 to take Tatum+ instead of Fultz is great and all, though the "+" in that deal turned into Romeo Langford, so if we're talking 20/20 hindsight it would have also been fine to just take Tatum #1 lol.
Ainge also had selected Desmond Bane in the 2020 draft and he then traded him away for 2 future 2nds. Point is, there is no exact science here. Every GM's has massively whiffed on guys in the draft. It's the one area that I think Weaver has been at least average at (mostly solid picks with 1 big miss). He struggles a lot more with roster construction, free agency, and asset management.

I think Weaver is just average at best as a GM. Hes not above replacement level whatsoever. NBA GM is a coveted high paid job their isnt many that get to do that. For me what hes done isnt good enough.
That said I take it we wont fire him though I would. So in that case he better do something this offseason. Overpaying Tobias and drafting a rookie setting us uo for another maybe 20 wins isnt good enough.
I really would fire him now. I think its easier to find a good GM now when we have the resources to improve. A big reason we got stuck with a mid GM like Weaver was due to us being such a bad job being SVG wrecked us.

I'm OK with maxxing Cade. I think he's a near-worthy player as-is. With a better compliment of players around him and/or another top-tier FA to help push him competitively, he should be able to find another level or two in his game. On the flip-side, if for some reason the FO would entertain an excellent return for him in a trade, I wouldn't shed any tears.

Get the right players around Cade. Weaver has not put him in a situation to succeed. He needs players around him that can space the floor.

Instead we got Stewart, Bagley, Hayes, etc trying to play with Cade.
Even if means trading a pick, getting a very good shooter on this team is important.

Re: Time to face reality about Cade
I'm still in favor of packaging 2x players and/or pick. Basically pick from Duren/Ausar/Ivey which one you want to keep with Cade, then go out & get yourself a legit player who can shoot.edmunder_prc wrote:buzzkilloton wrote:Get the right players around Cade. Maybe this is bonkers, but right now I think Ausar + Cade is the pair I wanna build around. It's gambling Ausar develops that shot, but the pay-off here could be huge & Ivey/Duren/Pick is a solid package.

Saw this, didn't post it, glad you did. Your commentary is all that needs to be said, to Troy Weaver.buzzkilloton wrote:Get the right players around Cade. Weaver has not put him in a situation to succeed. He needs players around him that can space the floor.

The way Gores operates, we’d get 2 years of Arn Tellem as the interim GM.

CADE past 16 games(post all-star break)
32.5mpg---YEAR---33.9
21.4ppg---YEAR---22.4
8.0apg---YEAR---7.5
4.3rpg---YEAR---4.1
2.8TO--->huge improvement---YEAR---3.5
.838FT%-->3.6/4.3---YEAR---.861
.438 3P% Elite--->2.2/5.0---YEAR---.364
.461FG%--->7.8/16.9---YEAR---.452
Cade can average 30 a night, and for the team to improve, he is going to need to be around 27ppg next year. He is also more then capable of playing high level defense, but often takes plays off, which is partly understandable as he runs the entire offense, and the team is 10-51. Not an excuse, just an observation. We've all seen him play steller defense, when he is willing.

I feel like next year, assuming we've added talent in FA, he most likely than not will still be in the 22-24 PPG range. I think his usage goes down and his efficiency goes up a bit and overall we're a better more balanced team because of it. That's assuming we do more than just draft a project and sign Tobias Harris.
Ideally we bring in another guy or two who can create their own, space the floor, and defend.
Realistically even if the Cade we are getting right now is about the same Cade we have next year we're in good shape. He's greatly reduced TOs and greatly improved efficiency already.

Re: Time to face reality about Cade
The reality is that Cade C is a star, they posted a stat yesterday about quickest to so many points/assists and he was 6th all time, behind Oscar Robertson/Doncic and other greats. Once the Pistons get rolling and he's unleashed no one will be questioning his max contract or position as the top player in his draft. As the Locked on Pistons guy said, no other #1 pick has the org/team working so hard to minimize his strengths, get the man who likes to go to the basket some shooters.

Crazy how much he's risen his stats over the last couple months. He's almost at a 2.0 OBPM now which seemed far off early on.

Get players who can get buckets! You should never limit your talent search for players that appease Cade's game.
