Brandon Knight scouting report

Post#1 » by JBucks » Wed Jul 31, 2013 2:52 am

Hi Pistons fans,

Can you give us Bucks fans a quick rundown of what to expect from Knight? What does he excel at? What does he need to improve on? Hear he's a hard worker who keeps his nose to the grindstone, so definitely looking forward to improvement in year 3.

Thanks!

He can play good defense of PGs, has a great work ethic and can hit the 3. He's not good at much else though. He plays the game way too fast and is a TO machine. I wish him the best, but Ive been rooting for him to be gone for months now. Wish we were able to trade him for something better though.

He's got a good 3 point shot but is inconsistent. His handles are below average to average. His passing is average. Has very little court vision. Solid defense, poor FT% for a PG. His best role, especially now, is as a 6th man off the bench. He shouldn't be starting on any team. Everyone compares him to Jason Terry and there's good reason for it, he hasn't shown enough to be a PG.

How about in crunch time, clutch situations?

He's not the guy you want with the ball in his hands in the clutch. He's ok if he's spotting up but your're in trouble if he's running the offense.

In all honesty, I can't remember any clutch situations except for a game against the Raptors at the start of last season. He made some clutch buckets down the stretch and helped us win the game.

He showed glimpses that he could be an above average PG (mainly against Cleveland because they passed over him twice in the draft and his rivalry with Kyrie), but overall he's been very inconsistent in both his shooting and playmaking skills.

I think his ceiling is a 16/4/6 type player on decent shooting %s but it might be a stretch to say he will ever be a starting PG on a playoff team, more likely a combo guard 6th man ala Jason Terry.

He's pretty much a D and 3 PG right now but has shown flashes of being great. His biggest problem is pacing. For what it's worth, I wanted Mayo and Knight to be our starting backcourt for next season. It's ironic that it will be your backcourt now. Mayo and Knight are good compliments because Mayo is a very good playmaker. I feel Knight can be an allstar if he gets it together.

Ignore some of the overreactions in here, Knight definitely showed glimpses of being very good & is a super high character hard worker with a very good ceiling.

He is a capable shooter & hopefully Milwaukee will finally give him a chance as the full time starting PG.

Also, I think you guys will love Middleton. Both of those guys could breakout next season. Bucks clearly won this trade.

Middleton should definitely be a good pickup for the Bucks. I wish we'd kept him instead of Singler. But come on, stop building Knight up so much. He DID show some great glimpses, but he then followed it up with 5-6 games of single digit scoring, 1-3 assists and 2-5 turnovers. He's not consistent enough to be building him up as a player with great potential. He definitely HAS potential, but he never showed that he was going to be capable of putting it all together next season or anytime soon. If he can string more good games together, then sure, but he was completely incapable of doing that last season.

The number one thing that separates a prospect from a good player is consistency. Wall had a lot of similar criticisms that Knight does. The dude has played 2 seasons and one was a lockout. He deserved more time especially when we signed Billups to take some of the pressure off him.

There is no comparison to be made between Knight and Wall. Wall has always been a pass first PG, Knight has consistently been the worst starting passing PG in the league. His A/TO ratio is a joke at 1.48 on his career. You cant be serious with this DP

He's terrible.

Great attitude, just not very good and low IQ B-Ball player (which is shocking because he was a 4.0 student).

Just terrible.

The Good:
Good athlete: Pretty explosive, you can throw lobs to him, and he will occasionally dunk over a big man. Very fast, very quick, and moves his feet well. Hes also has long arms, and keeps very good care of his body.
Great Work Ethic. No one will out work him. Great attitude.
Age: Hes very young, and given his physical attributes has very good upside.
Shooting: Mid range needs work, but hes a consistent threat from beyond the arc.
Defense: Against Point Guards, hes above average. Against two guards, hes below average.

The Bad:

Turnover Prone: A bit of an issue but he can improve it.
Court Vision: Hes not a natural point guard.
Shot selection at times is iffy, but he has become better in this department.

I'm not comparing their overall games though. I'm just comparing some of their weaknesses. Both struggled with consistency and pacing and Wall is finally figuring it out just now. People were ripping on Wall too until he put it together last season. I totally agree Knight is not a pass first PG but he could be a very good scoring PG if given time.
