OT - Things to do in Auburn hills / Detroit

I'm heading to Auburn hills for the weekend and was hoping to get a few recommendations from my detroit/michigan buddies for places to eat and drink in the area. I'll be in auburn hills Saturday and i might venture down to Detroit on the sunday.

What do you guys say??

Red Beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage at Louisiana Creole Gumbo (St. Aubin & Gratiot)

Sure there are only 2 booths and bulletproof glass but it is so worth it.

Depends on what you're into. The best thing about the D for me is the crazy neighborhoods and demographics. When I lived there I would take people from downtown over to the East Side--which is 90% empty, just vacant lots and ruins--and then down to Indian Village, which is a bunch of mansions right in the middle of all that emptiness. Belle Isle is close to that; it's an island in the river with nice views of downtown, and tons of people come there to have BBQs, show off their cars, run game on girls, etc. If you like seeing weird/unique stuff like that, you can also go to Dearborn. It's close to downtown and looks like a regular boring Michigan neighborhood, but it's like 90% Arabic, with killer Lebanese bakeries and middle eastern food.

If you're just looking for a few drinks and a quick bite, there are some great little bars around downtown. You'll probably have a great time at Nancy Whiskey on Spruce St, it's an old Irish/blues bar. Honest John's is pretty close to that if you want a burger etc; it's one of the few places in the city center that's fully integrated and has people from all backgrounds hanging out and smashing fried food. Slow's BBQ is also in the same neighborhood, and as CGC said everyone likes that.

Auburn Hills is all strip malls and McMansions. Can't help on that.

Detroit --> Grand Trunk Pub if you're into great burgers and microbrews. Rub Pub BBQ. Bucharest for amazing shawarmas. Motor City Brewing Co for amazing stone-oven pizza & microbrews.

Good memories... used to walked there from work... awesome creole gumbo.
Are they still doing the free concerts on the river?

FYI. Auborn Hills Palace is way out. Probably a good 45 minute drive. A nicer part of the area.

Slow's is nice, but here are some places that I'd suggest over Slow's:

Cliff Bells. Jazz bar, pricey, but great. No dress code. I've seen people in there with shirts and ties to guys dressed as hipsters. Feels like the 1940s when you go in there. On Park Avenue, which leads me to my next place.

Bucharest Grill: Right around the corner from Cliff Bells. Great shwarma, reasonably priced, always crowded but service is quick.

Mudgie's. On Porter Street in Corktown. Place is as Michigan as you can get. Faygo, Bells beer, the works. Great sandwiches, a little on the pricey side.

Tommy's Bar and Grill: Right down the street from Joe Louis. Detroit sports bar, owner looks like Ron Jeremy (Cool dude by the way). Very generous with the food.

Auburn Hills doesn't have much going for it, it's a suburb. Buddy's might be your best bet. If you're willing to drive to Clarkston, there's the Union, which has been on the Food Network several times. There's also the Red Coat Tavern in Royal Oak on Woodward, great burgers and they have Dogfish Head.

I love the Shwarma's from Bucharest. Hit it up every time I visit. Cool bar too. There are so many cool bars in Detroit.

these are great suggestions. I'm going to check out as much as possible. I'm sure i'll be back down there once the season starts so i'll be able to see even more.

Surprised that nobody has mentioned Pegasus Taverna yet.

In any case looks like you've got your hands full in terms of deciding where to go. Lots of great info in this thread...I'll probably check out a few of the suggestions sometime.

Looks like this place is getting some great reviews.

All these places look amazing. I'm definitely going to have to spend a week or so in detroit soon.

One of my fave places over the last couple of decades. The blackened steak tips and scottish eggs are also tasty.

There are endless things to do in Detroit on a nightly basis. Jazz, Blues, Flemenco, Detroit institute of Arts etc etc etc. Endless for a few night visit for sho. I usually hit up Bucharest during the afternoon while site seeing.

I love the Red Coat Tavern too. I always go there during the Woodward Dream Cruise.
