So originally it was Mike Malone who was against trading for Smith now Goodwill comes out and says it really was SVG that denied the trade for Smith.

If this is true Van Gundy is a moron. We could have had a fresh start without Josh Smith, played Thompson and Monroe at the 4, and signed Monroe to a new deal.

Even if we gave Monroe a huge deal and he didnt work out for us he would still be on contract and tradeable to any of the teams that have cap space this summer.

If Smith is on this roster by the end of the season and we lose Monroe for nothing mark this down as SVG first huge failure as GM

Mike Malone had little say in the matter, especially not enough to block a deal. It was always SVG all along that turned down the deal. I can't kill Stan for turning down the Kings deal, it would look really bad on him if he traded Smith for no talent and minimal salary relief and Smith suddenly popped into an all star with the Kings. Now that we all know Smith is what he is and Stan was not able to work a miracle, he should take whatever he can get to move the contract.

I would temper your words as we still have yet to make a move, if by the deadline expires we still have the same players, then yes he is a moron. HOWEVER, lets not forget that at that point monroe hadn't made his decision, and we hadn't made our decision on moose. We needed a starting PF and many of us still felt that smiths problem was he was playing SF. Also the only reason why we don't have monroe signed to a long term deal is that monroe didn't want to commit long term to detroit, not that we didn't want to pay him. We would have matched a max offer.

Monroe is not a pf, he can play the pf position but he's a center. He's exposed defensively on the perimeter. There has been no evidence that Moose/Dre are effective. While yes i would love to have monroe signed long term, fact is DRE is our franchise player, monroe doesn't compliment him. We need to get as many assets as we can for him and move on.

How many solid defensive starting power forwards even exist in the NBA today? Why are so many people stuck on Monroe being a poor defensive PF?

You should prob just go ahead & mark this down as SVG's first failure as a GM then.
