Sounds like he gained respect of good players and hard working players. Not super relevant now, but interesting nonetheless. Crazy thing is, Stan was the best coach we’ve had the past 15+ years and gave us our best season during that span. Shame he couldn’t draft.

Thanks for this.. The one thing I ALWAYS hear is how great he prepared his teams.

SVG was always good at preparing a team and pretty smart in basketball terms (at least as a coach). He was a “good” coach in that sense.

His personality wore on players though- I don’t think it’s coincidental that conflict grew the longer he was in one place. We saw it here too. His roster construction was bad but he also totally lost the locker room toward the end. He was a “bad” coach in that sense- and that’s every bit as important.

He rose to prominence right before player empowerment reached the point where players and organizations wouldn’t put up with the way he acts anymore.

Which is why his last stint was so brief and why he’s no longer on shortlists for NBA jobs anymore.

Honestly from what the video said, he's the exactly type of guy you need when rebuilding. We really could have used him all those years ago

A young team getting introduced to SVG in the NBA may have done wonders for the team. May even have salvaged Hayes too since Stan was a point guard whisperer

I'm guessing SVG would have only come here if he was GM and Coach.

He was going to go to Golden State and that's how Gores got him to come to the Pistons instead and the Warriors pivoted to Steve Kerr. Now there's an alternate history that makes you think. I'm sure SVG regrets that choice.

Kerr was offered the Knicks job (from Phil Jackson) but smartly chose GS

He was a good coach, bad GM. I do love him as an analyst on TV. Knowledgeable, funny, but not full of himself.
