It seems to me that there's an abnormally small number of one-loss teams at this point in the season.

Looking at Sagarin's top 30, this is the total # of teams that have...

  • zero losses: 11
  • one loss: 7
  • multiple losses: 12
I would have thought one-loss teams would be the largest group there. A lot of *pretty good* teams that already have more than one loss (e.g. Ole Miss, FSU, Oklahoma, Stanford). That could mean we have truer separation this year: the top tier is really that much better than everyone else.

Or it could mean we're in for wild-and-crazy chaos year, with just about everyone hitting multiple losses, and where we'll be debating something like undefeated Boise State vs 1-loss Houston vs 2-loss (insert random major conference champion) for the last playoff spot.

Good thing Boise State won't be undefeated because of a loss to BYU :D

They're out of the playoff picture, no question, but it could be interesting to see how the rest of their season plays out though. If Houston beats Louisville, and Boise State is able to win out and finish unbeaten, I think there very well may be two G5 teams in the NY6 bowl games.

Probably.

Unless, perhaps, there's chaos.

You're big on declaring teams "finished". I think in terms of probabilities. None of Boise State, Houston, or any 2-loss teams are in a remotely good position at this point in time. Agree to agree on that. And I think pretty much everybody agrees on the top five teams right now, and thinks it makes sense that the playoff could/would be composed of four of those five. Cool.

But here's a little history lesson for you.

2015 week 7 rankings:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Baylor
  3. TCU
  4. Utah
  5. Clemson

2014 week 7 rankings:

  1. Florida State
  2. Auburn
  3. Miss St
  4. Ole Miss
  5. Baylor

There's a lot of football left to play, and this year is already significantly more chaotic than the last couple years. There may not even be four power-5 teams with one-loss or less when all is said and done, given this season's trajectory, and given the inherent unpredictability of college football, especially as we move into the heart of conference play.

you dont see any american conference or mountain west teams on there, do ya? reality of college football is unless you are a power 5 team you need to run the table to have any shot at top 4. even 2 loss sec or big 10 teams will make it in over 1 loss american conference team.

No sample size issue there.

Arda K wrote:even 2 loss sec or big 10 teams will make it in over 1 loss american conference team.

ok, so that's interesting. Yeah, that's possible. You've been pretty dismissive of two-loss teams in other conversations, but I see: you would vote for the two-loss team in that scenario. yeah, not unreasonable. I personally think that's an extremely difficult conundrum to resolve: 2-loss (brutal schedule) vs 1-loss (moderate schedule) vs 0-loss (soft schedule).

"SEC or Big-10." Hmmm... no bias at all in that statement.

I mean, I think we all agree that to this point, Ohio State and Michigan look like two of the best teams in the country. But Sagarin currently rates the Big-10 as the worst power-5 conference, and it's not actually all that close. E.g., the AAC is closer to the Big-10 West than the Big-10 West is to the Pac-12 North, according to Sagarin’s #s. Just sayin’.

I disagree, I think they're right about where they belong at 10. They really haven't played anyone yet. Their only two opponents with winning records are TCU and Kansas State (both sitting at 4-3). I'm just not buying in quite yet.
