News abotu Jon Lester

Post#1 » by Dirty Water » Tue Apr 3, 2007 7:21 pm

Anyone find any new news regarding the status of Jon Lester? Is he doing rehab in single A and then going to take over in the rotation? or be sent the bullpen for long relief?

He's in Greenville for rehab and then he'll got to AAA until he's ready to join the rotation in Boston.

I think he's set to make four starts in Greenville.

My question is more of... if his rehab goes ok, and Say Julian Tavarez is really doing great in the rotation, will he go to the bullpen, or is the rotation spot his and Tavarez is just warming it up?

I don't think that has been determined. I'm pretty sure he'll be used exclusively in the rotation, though. They didn't use him in the bullpen last year, and I doubt they want to be jerking him around.

We did need more help in the rotation last season so that's probably why he was never used in the pen. But we have three lefties currently in the pen, Lester would just be overkill.

Lester was rushed last season because of injuries. He still could have used some fine tuning at AAA so if, somehow, Tavarez is ripping it up in the 5th spot then Lester will just stay down at AAA and pitch on a regular basis. He's still got options and could still use some work in the minors so it won't be that great of a sacrfice. He'll start 2008 in the rotation. mahalo

I heard he can't pitch from the pen, that his arm takes long to warm up. No source, sorry.

He pitched 4 innings of 2-hit ball in his first start yesterday. Apparently one of the hits was a misplayed infield grounder. Not too shabby. How does our rotation change if/when he gets back? I like Tavarez as a starter, but he sucks in the pen.

Another big issue will be Matt Clement.

What the hell do we do with that $8 million frustration?

Clement is out until July-August at the minimum. I'd be very surprised if he even throws a pitch as a Red Sox again, too.

Return to Boston Red Sox
