I'm looking for a little info on your team

Post#1 » by jazzfan1971 » Thu Jul 24, 2014 7:40 pm

I'm starting up my offseason preview and wanted to get some info and feedback from you guys before I got going.

So, I come to you folks.

How do you see your depth chart breaking down?
What are the major story lines to your team this year?
How do you think you will finish record wise in the league? (what place? 1-30)
Tell me a little about your coaching situation.

Thanks in advance.

I'll go into more depth later when I have a chance, but here's some quick thoughts:

Depth Chart

C - Howard/Dorsey or Motiejunas
PF - Jones/Motiejunas
SF - Ariza/Covington
SG - Harden/Daniels
PG - Beverley/Canaan

The following players will start the year in McAllen and will go up and down from the roster: Capela & Nick Johnson

Major Storylines:

Offseason - for the first time in three years Morey's master plan for the offseasondid not come to fruition. The team had it's depth gutted by trading off Lin & Asik in the process, but the big story was losing one of the biggest fan favorites we've had since Yao to a division rival. The depth is a major problem, but looking at the starting line right now the Rockets are actually going into the season as a better team defensively. There is an ever present chance of another trade whenever D.R.R. Morey is involved.

Regular Season - Big stories: Harden's defensive effort. How much will the offense be hurt by trading out Parsons for Ariza? Yao Ming's ceremony to retire his number.

I still think that the team will finish anywhere between 3-6 in the West. I don't see them finishing better than San Antonio or OKC, but after those two they remain in the next tier. I don't include the Clippers in the top tier due to uncertainty about how off-court issues may affect them.

Coaching - Players love McHale, many fans hate McHale. Not known as a strong X's & O's guy. They will likely need to bring in a solid defense-minded assistant. He needs to get better with regulating players minutes, utilizing time outs and substitutions.

More later and hopefully more posters check in with their thoughts.

Largely agree with Mr. E. I'll probably elaborate on McHale, since I'm relatively one of his bigger defenders and I know people will be castigating him.

I don't think McHale is a great coach. I don't even really think McHale is a good coach. He's a terrible X and Os guy, and is uncreative both offensively and defensively.

However, I don't think firing McHale changes anything. I don't think picking up JVG( who is colossally overrated), or some college coach, or Larry Drew, or Mike Woodson or whoever is what's holding Houston back from a championship. Unless you have an elite coach in the league like a Thibs or Pop, it doesn't make that much of a difference from one coach to the next. And at the end of the day, Dwight likes McHale, Harden likes McHale, and having a coach who commands the respect of the players is half the battle and is an underrated part of coaching. And I do think McHale has shown himself to be a decent coach at developing players, which works well given that we will absolutely need someone, whether Canaan or Johnson or Motiejunas, to step up if we're going to have a successful season.

Worst case scenario is that McHale has just one year left on his deal. Play the season out, see how things go.
But do you know what they call a fool, who's full of himself and jumps into the path of death because it's cool?

2014-15 is the final year of his contract. (is that what you meant?) I think he's here because he has a good relationship with Kevin Love and just in case we get him either in a trade or lure him in FA. Also there really isn't very many good alternatives out there coaching wise.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

How do you see your depth chart breaking down?
pg - beverley/ish smith/isiah canaan :banghead:
sg - harden/troy daniels/nick johnson :D
sf - ariza/none of many cheap 3/d fa's morey could've got if he wasnt so **** cheap as hell :banghead:
pf - jones/dmo/adrien :-?
c - dwight/dorsey/powell, hopefully clint capella later in the season :)

What are the major story lines to your team this year?

1 - will dwight have a beast season? he's gotten used to his new team, and not switching teams in the offseason, and gets more shots with the 25-30ppg we lost from parsons and lin. i said it last season that his 2nd year will be significantly better
2 - how the team adjusts after the offseason changes (or losses). who is gonna score outside of dwight, harden and ariza? will morey's cheap ass contract players give productive minutes off the bench?
3 - team defense. 3 of the 5 starters are above average defenders. rockets fans should watch for daniels on defense. he said he wants to be more of a complete player and has been working on defense for years. he's listed at 6'4 but really 6'6 in shoes. he has the size.

How do you think you will finish record wise in the league? (what place? 1-30)
i dont like predicting records since its kinda pointless. better to predict what "tier" or "rank" your team is. right now, we're worse than last season. i'd say 6-7 seed

Tell me a little about your coaching situation.
the players like him so he must be good off the court. it is huge for the players to get alogn with the coach. but in game he's average. not great with x's and o's, rotations, subs, adjustments. he's in a "contract year" so maybe he'll step up his game

People are sleeping on nick johnson and gee!!

Bev/Johnson/Canaan
Harden/Daniels/Johnson
Ariza/gee/Covington or Garcia
Jones/motie/rocky's wife
Howard/motie/Dorsey

I just hope jones takes a step forward and motie gets plenty of minutes and shines

Nick Johnson and Troy Daniels are going to take the league by storm!!!

(Yes nick will probably start in the d-league and Canaan and ish will fight for the backup, but I don't care!! Nick Johnson FTW!)

Just note I am delirious because since I got Omar I haven't slept past 5.....if having kids is 10000000x worse than this then I am going to have an upset girlfriend and my parents will never be grandparents

My first thought, too.
Still just a hair under 6'5", which isn't bad.

Lets see, lets keep it short and simple.....
Howard and Harden are the cornerstones, and everyone else are just pieces, role players, or assets.
Thats sums up the Rox.

PG - Patrick Beverly, Ish Smith, Isaiah Canaan
SG - James Harden, Troy Daniels, Nick Johnson
SF - Trevor Ariza, Francisco Garcia, Robert Covington
PF - Terrence Jones, Donatas Moteijunas, Jeff Adrien
C - Dwight Howard, Joey Dorsey, Josh Powell

Does this need any major corrections?

Well you didn't include Kostas Papa, Jason Terry or Clint Capela so yes.
