I'm guessing you're asking why not keep #15 and just take an early 4th instead? That's an easy answer. A GM would rather guarantee (or at least increase the likelihood) they get their guy. Philly moved up 1 spot to get Jalen Carter which I'm sure seems even more silly to their fans, but that's how it works

And I don't know why we're assuming the Patriots wouldn't have kept their pick and taken Van Ness themselves if he was available. We're not privy to the 32 big boards that actually matter, only the media's.

Love it. Top available edge rusher on my board. He’s gonna be a stud. Would have been happy with him, JSN, or Kincaid.

Van Ness is a good (not great) player, but I would not have given him a first-round grade for a lot of reasons (listed below), and with so much talent still left on the boards at positions of need for the Packers, this seems like a reckless luxury pick for a team that should be acquiring as many true cornerstone players as possible.

F*ckin' yikes.

I’d take 10 good edge rushers on my roster even if it meant I had to have Romeo Doubs at my WR1. We do not have that much at edge as it is and you can never have enough talent there.

Yea calling it a luxury pick is pretty ridiculous.

It's never a luxury to draft pass rushers. But the value proposition of taking LVN at 13 gives me a lot of pause. It feels like boom-bust with a guy like that.

But he obviously looks like a freakish athlete. Watching Gary and LVN on opposite edges could be very very fun.

We have Rashan Gary with 1 knee, Enagbare who overachieved as a rookie and is certainly a question mark still, Preston Smith who’s aging and about as lackluster as they come at this point and ST guys that just happen to be designated “OLB” as their positions because you have to have one..

Calling the position a luxury pick is as short sighted and lazy as possible. Just typical media hating on what the Packers do because we didn’t take a pass catcher for the 21st draft in a row.

The real luxury here is the player we drafted. Getting the 2nd best pass rusher at 13 is super sexy. Hercules! Hercules! Hercules!

I was thinking we would go for a WR or TE, but it's GB, so we never draft these positions in 1st round, however I see we using our both picks in the 2nd round to fill those positions.

Just got home. While I would have preferred JSN I'm very happy with the LVN pick. He was my #8 overall player and screams future stud to me. He's somewhat raw so I don't expect him to be a starter in year 1 but I think he follows the Rashan Gary path. He's extremely athletic and young at a premium position with sky high upside.

Also of note the Lions took my 47th & 79th rated players & the Vikings took my 83rd rated player so I'm very happy tonight

The knock on LVN is he was a one trick bull-rushing pony. But he's so young and athletically gifted I don't think you care.

Sure was.

Intriguing thing about LVN is he's done basically all his work without any idea with what to do with his hands, and his hands are **** enormous. Bear claws.

I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about this because I've been so out of touch with the Packers lately, but an edge rusher can be a game changing player so the premium at getting one of top rated ones in the draft is a big deal.

Gary turned out nice so it he has a similar growth path it's worth it.
