Why is having cap space in reserve bad?
There's exactly zero downside with carrying extra cap space over to next year. There's no limit to how much can be carried over, and allows flexibility for Gute to strike when a deal appears.

It's the restructuring in order to hoard part that's bad

it pushes potential dead money into the future or even just adding to a future cap hit hit instead of just letting it hit the current year

The 4 FA kickers who signed were Lutz (stayed in Denver), Folk (stayed in Tennessee), McManus (Jacksonville to Washington) and Slye (Washington to Jacksonville)

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers almost signed a veteran kicker to serve as a true challenger to Anders Carlson, a league source told Packer Central.

The identity of the kicker will be withheld for this story. However, he has been a full-time kicker for multiple seasons.

According to the source, the Packers offered him a contract and the kicker agreed to it, only for him to have a change of heart and sign with another team.

Packers paid out the entire bonus for Jaire, Jenkins, and Preston. Smart, pay now and have money to give to the youngsters who earn it.

from Acmepackingcompany.com - I think more guesstimate than hard info.

Wilson is eligible for the NFL’s veteran salary benefit, a salary-cap mechanic that allows teams to absorb a salary cap hit lower than a player’s actual compensation, and a one-year contract under this provision is likely to be the deal that Wilson has signed. As a seven-year veteran, Wilson’s league-minimum base salary would be $1.21 million; under the veteran salary benefit, he could receive an additional $167,500 in compensation (as a signing bonus, for example) while only costing the Packers $985,000 against the salary cap — the league minimum salary for a two-year veteran.

Nice. I like this dude. He’s a special teams demon and tough against the run when he’s out there on defense. Less than 1m against the cap is a no brainer to keep him around. Love this off season so far. Would still like to add some more depth in FA but I’m very excited for the draft.

I mean it's not unlikely. Packers have the cap space, a need and given how late we are into the FA it probably would be a extravagant deal so yeah if they're starting to feel underwhelmed with the Saftey prospects in the draft it would make a lot of sense.

Personally I'm surprised he hasn't been signed yet but reports are/were he was looking for a sizeable deal.

Another safety off the board. I know Simmons hasn't been awesome in a few years, but he's still solid. Wonder why he's out there.

Hasn’t been awesome in a few years? He’s been an all pro safety 4 out of the last 5yrs and led the league in picks 2 seasons ago in only 12 games played. Your ceiling for awesome must be in the heavens Lol. I mean to your point I guess, he hasn’t had a 90+ tackle season since 2020 but 80, 69 and 70 the last 3 years isn’t a huge drop off imo.

He also had a passer rating against of 101.9 the year he had all those picks.

After looking into it more your point is valid. His best season was 2019 and then 2021 so I guess he is a few years removed from being awesome like you said.
