GT: Packers at 49ers - 1/20/24 - 7:15 - FOX

Post#1 » by MickeyDavis » Fri Jan 19, 2024 3:57 pm

All the pressure is on the Niners. They're good. CMC will be tough to handle. Purdy seems like the perfect QB for their system. They're healthy. They're at home. But the Niners were better on the road (7-2) than at home (5-3). Their 3 home losses were to the Bengals, Ravens and Rams.

Right now the game time forecast is 57 with scattered showers. Wind 9-14.

From ESPN:

This is an NFL-record 10th playoff meeting between the Niners and the Packers, with San Francisco holding a 5-4 edge. What's more, the Niners have won six straight NFC divisional-round playoff games, the longest active streak in the NFL. The winner will either take or share the title of winningest team in postseason history. The Packers are tied with the Patriots at 37 and could move into first place alone with a win, while a 49ers victory would tie them with Green Bay and New England

The 49ers have won their past five home playoff games, the longest active streak in the NFL, with two of those wins coming against the Packers (2012 divisional round and 2019 NFC Championship Game). The 49ers have dominated those matchups, with four of five wins coming by 14-plus points

Referee Alex Kemp's regular-season crew led the NFL with an average of 15.3 flags per game. The Packers and 49ers both finished in the top third of the NFL for most flags this season, the 49ers with 125 and the Packers with 124.

The Packers have won four straight games outright as underdogs, their longest underdog win streak since 2011-12.

Note on the officials, while the NFL uses mixed crews in the playoffs, 6 of the 8 officials were on Kemp's regular season crew, so expect a lot of flags.

House money or not let's win this game

Same recipe as Dallas. Control the clock with Jones and get after the QB with the front 7.

They cannot have any big mistakes in this one (huge penalties, special team errors, turnovers).

If we win the toss we'll likely take the ball. If the Niners win the toss they'll likely defer. Opening drive score would be big.

Re: pintsizedbox from locked thread. Na losing because they gave up 300 on the ground would be alright because I imagine that would get Barry fired.

I should also note I don't by any means consider the past 30 years of Packers football a failure or a waste of time. I know how lucky we've had it big picture wise. But some of the losses were **** painful and I do think it a more fun rooting experience in tbe playoffs when you're the underdog.

Yeah, just because I grew to expect Rodgers and the Packers to underachieve in the playoffs doesn't mean I considered them a disappointment or thought anything less than a title was unacceptable, and it certainly doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the good seasons before the heartbreaking losses. It just means there were some systemic issues that they were consistently unable to address.

I enjoy seasons like this a little more because they usually foreshadow another long window of contention, but with more opportunities to address their deficiencies because so much of their core is still on rookie contracts. Some time around the middle of the last decade, it seemed the Packers were just paying to keep most of their core together. Without higher draft picks and significant cap space for free agents, they were kind of running in place, and we were watching the same movie over and over - even if it was a good movie despite the unhappy endings.

When Favre took over in game 2 1992 the team went from 4-12 to 9-7 (no playoffs). Then a slow rise, 2 more 9-7 seasons (1-1 in the playoffs both of those years), then 11-5, lost in the NFC championship game, and then the SB win in his 5th year.

Rodgers took over in 2008 and the team went from 13-3 to 6-10 but won the SB in his third year as starter.

A majority of seasons with those 2 were Super Bowl or bust seasons and ended in disappointment. It's kind of nice to be resetting expectations and just enjoying this season even if/when we fall short. There will be no disappointment tomorrow. Good things are on the horizon.

I think the only way we can win is in a shootout, which is doable if the O-Line can keep Love upright. If he has time, SF (nor most teams for that matter) cannot cover WRs 3, 4 and 5.

Yup, this is a avoid punting unless absolutely necessary type game.

Excellent point about WR's 3, 4, and 5. Packers are so deep there you just can't cover them all. We need to be physical. A few years ago when the 49ers beat us they were so physical and we were letting them toss us around. If we can just even it up and cause a turnover or 2 like the game against Dallas we got a shot. I'm not worried about Purdy. We need to contain McCaffrey at all costs. Love can absolutely throw on their secondary. Be aggressive and go at them hard early. Take some deep shots. This is it, time to play perfect football or go home!

Who was it that destroyed the niners, Baltimore? Watch that tape and see what you can do. I feel like the TEs had a big game but could be wrong

Surprise Karl Brooks game, calling it now. I think he's ready to sneak up on some unsuspecting opponent.

Purdy threw 4(!) picks in that game and then suffered a stinger and was replaced by Darnold

120-104.

Oops, wrong thread. But I'd still take the over, even in the rain and with penalty-happy zebras.

Regardless of outcome, thank you, Jordan Love, for rescuing my Packer fandom from the pit of Rodgers petulance.

So what do people think, does the potential rain benefit us or the 49ers?

Watch for some errant throws or ball handling issues with Brock's smaller than normal hands in the rain.

The rain should help us, Purdy has small hands which should make it more difficult to grip the football. It could in theory be a decent equalizer for us which is something we want as I think most would agree that San Francisco is the better team.
Coach Drew: "Milwaukee has always been a team that I have been intrigued by. When we played them, they were a tough team for us to play. Although we did beat them all four times"

The rain is interesting (65% chance). I'm not sure it benefits neither team. Hopefully we don't lose on some fluke play or have an injury on the wet field.

Different cleats? or is that more of a frozen field swap?
