On Texans' Matt Schaub and throwing deep

http://espn.go.com/blog/houston-texans/post/_/id/804/on-matt-schaub-and-throwing-deep

Texans fans are making their angst about quarterback Matt Schaub known, some more publicly than others, but many of those who didn't take to cups-in-fences art to make their point have focused on one aspect of the Texans' passing game: deep balls.

If we consider a deep ball to be a pass that traveled more than 20 yards, Schaub's total of seven is one of the lowest in the NFL. Only five quarterbacks who have played in all three games have thrown fewer such passes: Kansas City's Alex Smith, Dallas' Tony Romo, Miami's Ryan Tannehill, Atlanta's Matt Ryan and Detroit's Matthew Stafford. All of those quarterbacks -- except for Ryan -- have winning records and two of them are undefeated. Ryan only attempted passes that long in two games. Same goes for New England's Tom Brady and Indianapolis' Andrew Luck, who also has seven.

If we reduce our qualification to passes longer than 15 yards, Schaub's number of attempts rank in the top third of the quarterbacks who have played this season. He's tied with Titans quarterback Jake Locker with 22 passes thrown that traveled longer than 15 yards. He and Locker are very near each other in passer rating on those passes: Schaub's is 62.9 and Locker's is 62.3.

The quarterbacks who have thrown the most passes that traveled longer than 15 yards in the air are Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger (33 attempts, 0-3 record), Philadelphia's Michael Vick (31 attempts, 1-2 record), New Orleans' Drew Brees (30 attempts, 3-0 record) and Arizona's Carson Palmer (29 attempts, 1-2 record). Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and Jets quarterback Geno Smith are next, tied with 27 attempts and both of their teams are 2-1.

More interesting: Only one of the quarterbacks who are among the top five in passing attempts that travel longer than 15 yards leads a passing offense that ranks in the top five of the NFL.

A more important factor than attempting those passes is how successful you are with the ones you do attempt. The Denver Broncos have the highest average passing yards per game in the NFL with 374.7. Their quarterback, Peyton Manning, has thrown fewer passes that traveled longer than 15 yards in the air than Schaub. Manning has thrown 21 to Schaub's 22. But Manning has thrown four touchdowns on such passes, and has a passer rating of 130.4 and a QBR of 99.3 on them.

Cut Schaub

Who do you want leading the Texans next season?

Only QB on that list I'd take over Manziel is Mariota and may be McCarron.

I'm with you on Mariota, but less so on McCarron. I do like Tajh Boyd a little bit, but Manziel would be fun just for all the stuff around it.

Get Manziel another receiver and suddenly he's working with Johnson, Hopkins, Martin, New Receiver. In addition to that, the Texans would have a QB on a rookie salary, which means they could afford to keep a guy like Tate and perhaps strengthen the defense. Tons of flexibility there.

NFL Films Presents: J.J. Watt

http://nflfilms.nfl.com/2013/09/25/nfl-fillms-presents-j-j-watt/

Defensive End J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans is in his third year of professional football. Last season, he had 20.5 sacks, 16 passes deflected, and was named Defensive Player of the Year, proving that he is a phenomenal player. After spending some time with him this summer, I learned that J.J. Watt is also a phenomenal person.

Watt’s meteoric rise from freshman tight end at Central Michigan, to the NFL Defensive Player of the Year took five seasons. After playing tight end for one year, Watt returned home to Wisconsin, hoping to switch to defense and play for the Wisconsin Badgers. I had read his story, and really wanted to do a feature on how he had delivered pizzas when he was trying to walk on at the University of Wisconsin. NFL Films contacted the Texans to pitch the story, and what we found out was so much more interesting than just a player trying to make a college team.

Although not from the state, J.J. Watt has ingratiated himself to the fan base, and in this feature, we reveal the overwhelmingly positive effect that Watt has had on the city of Houston.

We idolize many of our sports heroes because of their performances on the field. The reason I would want my two daughters to know the name J.J. Watt is because of his performance off of it.

Sounds like Duane Brown likely won't play and Andre Johnson will.

Reed: Teams may meet in Super Bowl

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9728390/ed-reed-calls-houston-texans-seattle-seahawks-potential-super-bowl-matchup

HOUSTON -- Though it's early in the season, Houston Texans safety Ed Reed said his team could make a statement Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

"This is a potential Super Bowl matchup," Reed said.

The Texans (2-1) will host the Seahawks (3-0) in their first of four games against NFC West teams. The matchup sits in a challenging stretch for Houston, a week after its 30-9 loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens and preceding a game against the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers.

"We had to make a lot of corrections this week, Monday, which we did to get better," Reed said. "You can't win them all. We know that now."

Sunday's game will feature the defenses ranked first and second in total defense and passing yards allowed. The Texans have given up 249 yards per game, while the Seahawks have allowed 241.7 yards per game.

Asked if facing the top-ranked defense is motivating, Reed said it was.

"Of course, of course, but [Houston's D is] not playing against their defense," Reed said. "We're playing against their offense and we've gotta execute our plan to give our team the best opportunity to win on offense and special teams."

Duane Brown practices with first team on Thursday

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/article-2/Duane-Brown-practices-with-first-team-on-Thursday/a5e8fab8-1e68-433e-b603-c6aa32147e66

Left tackle Duane Brown took another positive step forward on Thursday, practicing with his teammates at the Houston Methodist Training Center. The 2012 All-Pro sprained a toe in his right foot during the Week 2 win over the Titans, and didn’t travel to Baltimore for Week 3. Head coach Gary Kubiak said Brown is still a gametime decision for Week 4 against Seattle.

“If he can play at his level,” Kubiak said. “We’re not going to put Duane in a real bad position. We’ve got to see him be able to do the things he’s capable of doing.”

Brown was also on the practice field Wednesday, but only took part in individual drills. Today, he took reps with the first team, and Brown said the differnce between practice and a game is big. He also is uncertain about his availability for Sunday.

"I'm not sure yet," Brown said. "Still a gametime decision."

Brown said he "felt pretty good" and that he was taking it one day at a time. Kubiak said Brown’s presence on Sunday would be an all-or-nothing venture.

“If he plays, he would go the full time,” Kubiak said. “It’s not like we’d play him and pull him out every 20 plays.”

Ryan Harris started in place of Brown on Sunday against the Ravens.

Maybe the Texans stand a chance since it is likely the Seahawks will be missing more then half there starting line.

The Texans could really use a couple picks in this game and for Schaub to not throw any.

Schaub's a good Quarterback , we just need to work on our offensive line especially the right side .

Andre is having a game already and it's nice to see the ball actually moving down the field.

Wow that touchdown to Graham was probably Schaub's best throw of the season

Strong first half, but I still hate the field goals. The defense is playing great.
