Milwaukee Brewers at San Diego Padres 5/26/07; 9:05 PM

Post#1 » by Captain Erv » Sat May 26, 2007 6:28 pm

Image vs Image

Records at Glance: Brewers: 28-20, 1st NL Central; Padres: 27-21, 2nd NL West

Location: PETCO Park in San Diego, CA

TV: WMLW
Radio: 620 WTMJ

Image
Claudio Vargas, RHP (3-0, 3.68)

Image
Justin Germano, RHP (2-0, 0.47)

Scouting Report:

Brewers: The Brewers inproved to 7-1 in Vargas' starts after rallying to beat the Twins last weekend at Miller Park. He lasted only four innings Sunday in his poorest outing of the year, allowing five Minnesota runs on six hits and a season-high six walks. Vargas has a 2.68 ERA in eight career appearances against the Padres and is 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA in four games at PETCO Park, where the large dimensions suit his fly-ball style.

Padres: There's still a chance this start could go to Clay Hensley, who could be activated from the disabled list to start, though Germano certainly has thrown well enough to stay in the rotation. Germano allowed one unearned run on six hits over six innings against Seattle on May 20, getting 11 groundball outs. He's 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA in three starts filling in for Hensley.

Padres Probable Lineup:

2B Marcus Giles
RF Jose Cruz Jr
CF Mike Cameron
1B Adrian Gonzalez
SS Khalil Greene
C Josh Bard
3B Kevin Kouzmanoff
LF Terrmel Sledge
P Justin Germano

Brewers Probable Lineup:
2B Rickie Weeks
3B Ryan Braun
SS JJ Hardy
1B Prince Fielder
C Johnny Estrada
CF Bill Hall
LF Geoff Jenkins
RF Tony Gwynn
P Claudio Vargas

Captain Erv's Thoughts:
The Brewers finally showed some life in the 6th and 7th inning last night, but it was too little too late. This team really needs to avoid the things that have crippled them in the past such as bad defense and the inability to get runners in. Germano has been pitching out of his mind and he has to come out of it sometime. If our bats can get going we can spike that 0.47 ERA.

I missed much of the game last night because I fell asleep. Did Gwynn get an at bat?

Gwynn batted twice, walking and striking out.

Yeah not bad. Dad was there taking pictures. He was also in the booth for an inning. They have a great relationship. Sort of the opposite of the Fielders.

Hopefully we can take this kid out of his groove and tag him for a 4 or 5.

well germano is really similar to Maddux. He doesn't throw hard at all, he has good movement on his pitches and he has a big old Curveball. The key IMO is to be patient and get him early. But this year the brewers have done a good job of breaking pitchers out of their grooves. But the brewers aren't the same team as early on. Talent wise i think they are better but the pitching hasn't been there. a good outing for Claudio tonight is what we are going to need.

So much for Hart getting 400-500 AB's this year. :(

He's had a tough time cracking the lineup this year. But you would think, if he was really that good, wouldn't he show it in practice? Then, if he indeed showed his super skill in practice, wouldn't he crack the lineup more often? Is he really not as good as we think he is? Sure, he has rare speed for a guy his size but he basically has only had one good month and I really don't see the power everyone sees.

He had a good start and then got hurt either he's still hurt or Yost isn't playing him like he said he would. He's a better player than Gwynn though.

you gotta think that mench or someone will be gone and he'll be seeing more time. maybe they're just trying to build value for mench or gross. though you'd think that wouldn't last much longer.

So what's worse, watching Ann Carrol or watching The Brewers Inside Pitch?
