Rams to sign Donnie Jones to an offer sheet

Post#1 » by Lane1974 » Thu Apr 12, 2007 11:11 pm

5 years, 5.85 million

we have 7 days to match, if we choose to let him go, we get the Rams 7th round pick

I say let him go -- he is average, nothing super

He was pretty good for us last season.

But another pick would be nice, but it's a 7th rounder. :-?

Who is Donnie Jones?

JK. Take the pick. Deep draft.

I rather keep Jones. A 7th rounder might not even make the team.

Eh, I'd keep Jones. He did a solid job for us last season. I'm not sure how that offer sheet matches up with the average going rate for punters, but I say go ahead and match it.

eh, has a punter ever been the difference between a Super Bowl contender and a washout? Take the pick and sign someone off the street to punt. Marques Colston went in the 7th round last year. We also go Fred Evans and Rodrique Wright as 7th rounders -- better chance finding a "legit position" diamond in the rough than keeping a punter for over a million a year.

I dunno...the 1st 3 years of that deal are pretty reasonable, after which you could probably re-structure with him, and never pay him a mil per. Plus, didn't he lead the league in net punting? He was great in the field position game.

With a great defense like the 'Phins have, field position helps a lot.

Miami unlikely to match offer for Jones

Or at least so says Rosenhaus.

well, our D was nasty last year, in part because we had the best net average punter in the L IIRC. the thing that hurt was our O always turning the ball over. you have even a competent offense, and our D would've finished ranked even higher than it was.

Punter is an important position to a team like Miami, whose offense basically stinks and our only strenght, the defense, needs every yard it can get to play the opposition. I am not sure that a 7th rounder is worth losing Jones. Maybe they can squeeze another pick (a la Welker) out of the Rams. Then I could see it being worth it. Other than that, a young solid Punter in Jones is more important to us right now and in the future than any 7th rounder we don't know anything about.

 Donnie

ESPN.com wrote:The Miami Dolphins have decided not to match the offer sheet punter Donnie Jones signed with the St. Louis Rams last week, instead choosing to accept another draft pick as compensation.

Miami gets the Rams' seventh-round choice, the 225th overall selection. The Dolphins now have 10 picks in the April 28-29 draft, including four of the first 71.

"Having 10 picks not only will allow us to add youth to our football team, but it also will give us a great deal of flexibility over the course of the draft," Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller said.
