2014 vikings training camp thread

Post#1 » by hermes » Thu Jul 24, 2014 2:32 pm

49th camp at mankato

here is a guide to camp (for fans if you are able to attend)
http://www.foxsports.com/north/story/vi ... amp-072314
it also has links to previews for each position

big story lines for this camp:
- qb competition (its wide open - except for maybe ponder)
- how the defensive line shakes out
- how the starting linebackers shake out
- what role anthony barr ends up in
- tailback situation (got ap, asiata, felton and mckinnon - maybe only keeping three? who would be the odd man out?)

what are you guys going to keep an eye on during camp?

I'm mainly excited about Bridgewater. I'm hoping he starts right away.

Certainly the qb battle, but I am more interested in how the young defensive line looks and Griffen in particular. We'll see as well how a healthier secondary looks too.

Obviously the qb competition is the big deal, but I want to hear about how Barr is progressing and who is winning the MLB position as well as the Strong Safety spot (so far it has been Blanton).

Heard he's been doing pretty well. Working out with Chuck Liddell to get his strength up mentally & physically.

Me too. Curious about how the linebackers and secondary shake out as well, but QB is the biggy.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

some notes from interviews on the radio this morning:

- adrian has put on some muscle and confirmed he's going to have a bigger role in the passing game and he's looking forward to it (and adrian got married this summer)
- kyle rudolph has slimmed down (12 some pounds) so he can run around a lot more
- people are excited to have linval joseph as a big body there on the line, really for the first time since pat williams
- the outside corners are going to be challenged a lot more because of the single high safety there will be less help for them

also norv has great stories about everyone, just name any nfl player and he's got something good about him

It sounds like there's been nothing but positive reports about Teddy Bridgewater.

yeah i guess he is really gunning for that starting gig, which is good because that will push cassel

i don't know about you guys but after the carousel at qb last year, i think whoever wins the job should have the job all year (unless there is an injury) just to have some continuity

That might be a lot to ask. I think Cassel is probably the favorite to start the season, but not necessarily the favorite to finish the season.

Read that Teddy was a little shaky in practice yesterday, was outplayed by Cassell.

Teddy and Cassel have been throwing interceptions like crazy, especially Teddy. This must be good news about defense, but it worries be that Cassel, (a veteran) is throwing them. I'm pulling for Teddy but am happy for either.

Had a rough start, but has looked good when given the chance. Read that a couple of people were saying they could wish to see more of him, but team has already decided that he is 3rd string, which makes sense.

first depth chart released by the team
http://www.dailynorseman.com/2014/8/5/5 ... chart-2014

big things are on defense, barr is the starter outside right now, couple of other rookies are backups: watts (weak lb) and price (right corner)

Just read that Bridgewater threw 3 interceptions last night and two other passes that could have also been intercepted. Don't want to write him off yet, but he is a rookie and it appears Cassel has a big lead on starting job.

shamar stephen has been having a good camp, worked with the first team today (with linval still out) and has a good shot at a roster spot i guess

another couple picks for teddy, cassel seems to be getting closer to claiming the starter spot

Sounds like Cassell is almost for sure the starter week one, since he is the veteran and is outplaying Teddy. No problem with that, he'll adjust to the NFL, but he obviously needs some time.
