Since 2000, Raiders' draft record has been disgusting

Post#1 » by FNQ » Sun Jan 5, 2014 8:07 pm

So to preface, I'm recovering from surgery, and my friend and I got into it about who's had the worst 13 years: the Raiders or his Clippers. Eventually the talk went to draft, and we consulted the interwebz, and what I found was pretty awful. So naturally, I want to share it. I only did the 1st 3 rounds, and just broke them into 4 groups: Good Value, Solid Value, Bad Value, Total Busts.

Good Value:
CB Nmandi Asomugha, RD 1, 2003
MLB Kirk Morrison, RD 3, 2005 (acq via trade (HOU), with 2005 2nd for Philip Buchanon)
DE Lamaar Houston, RD 2, 2010, 44th pick (via trade, with 2010 6th for #42; which was acq via trade of #39 for #42 and 2010 5th rdr. #42 pick was Rob Gronkowksi)
OT Jared Veldheer, RD 3, 2010

Solid Value:
K Seabass, RD 1, 2000
DE Matt Shaughnessey, RD 3, 2009
RB Justin Fargas, RD 3, 2003
OT Langston Walker, RD 2, 2002 (via Gruden trade)
C Jake Grove, RD 2, 2004 (via Gruden trade)
CB Stanford Routt, RD 2, 2005
TE Zach Miller, RD 2, 2007 (acq with 2007 4th rder for 2007 2nd rounder)
C Stefan Wisnewski, RD 2, 2011

Bad Value:
OLB Sam Williams, RD 3, 2003 (acq via trade: with 2003 7th, for 2004 2nd)
RB Darren McFadden, RD 1, 2008
WR Jerry Porter, RD 2, 2000
S Derrick Gibson, RD 1, 2001
MLB Napoleon Harris, RD 1, 2002
CB Philip Buchanon, RD 1, 2002 (PB was 17th pick. Acq. via trade: #18 + 2002 5th, after #21 + 2002 3rd to get the #18. Wow)
TE Doug Jolley, RD 2, 2002
TE Teyo Johnson, RD 2, 2003
DE Tyler Brayton, RD 1, 2003 (via Gruden trade)
OT Robert Gallery, RD 1, 2004
QB Marques Tuiasosopo, RD 2, 2001
S Stuart Schwiegert, RD 3, 2004
CB Fabian Washington, RD 1, 2005 (via trade w SEA: #26 + 2005 5th; #26 acquired from NYJ with 2005 7th for Doug Jolley, 2005 2nd, and 2 2005 6ths. Also of note, the next pick was Aaron Rodgers.)
S Michael Huff, RD 1, 2006
OLB Thomas Howard, RD 2, 2006
OT Paul McQuistan, RD 3, 2006
OT Mario Henderson, RD 3, 2007 (via trade w NE, for 2007 7th and 2008 3rd)
S Mike Mitchell, RD 2, 2009 (via trade w NE, + 2009 4th and 6th for 2009 2nd)
OT Joe Barksdale, RD 3, 2011 (via trade w NE, w 2011 4th for 2012 2nd and 2011 7th)

Total Busts (Out of the league quickly guys):
DE DeLawrence Grant, RD 3, 2001
QB Andrew Walter, RD 3, 2005
DE Quentin Moses, RD 3, 2007
QB Jamarcus Russell, RD 1, 2007
WR Derius Heyward-Bey, RD 1, 2009 (projected)
MLB Rolando McClain, RD 1, 2010
CB Demarcus Van Dyke, RD 3, 2011
OT Tony Bergstrom, RD 3, 2012

*2000 3rd rder traded for 2 '99 5th rounders
*2002 3rd rder traded with #21 to get #18 in 2002, eventually landed Philip Buchanon
*2004 2nd rder traded for 2003 3rd + 2003 7th
*2005 1st rder traded for Randy Moss
*2008 2nd rder traded with 2008 5th rder for DeAngelo Hall
*2008 3rd rder traded for 2007 3rd and 7th (Mario Henderson)
*2011 1st rder traded for Richard Seymour
*2012 1st rder traded with 2013 2nd rder for Carson Palmer
*2012 2nd rder traded with 2011 7th rder for 2011 3rd and 4th rders
*2012 3rd rder used in supplemental draft to select Terrell Pryor

So I left out the 2013 guys so far, though I'd likely put Hayden as bad value, Watson and Moore as solid.

But man, that is a really, really rough stretch. Only 4 guys I could honestly put up as good value picks in 13 drafts. Its looking better of late, but at least find comfort in knowing that we aren't as bad as we were, and I doubt we (or anyone, frankly) ever could be.

as a lifetime clippers fan since manning-harper days and also as a lifetime raiders fan since bo jackson days, i can honestly say that the raiders had much worse decade. clips made a playoff push with elton brand and sam cassell, just 1 game away from western conference finals and since griffin and CP3 pairing up, a back to back appearance to playoffs as 4th seed. clips drafted poorly when we passed up granger for korolev and again drafting al farouq over paul george, but it's not like those mistakes are like the blazers passing up jordan and durant for bowie and oden.

raiders on the other hand, pissed away the #1 overall pick on a moron with an addiction, and another 1sr rounder to a basket case who wanted kill people, which both are out of the league entirely and both are still in their mid 20s. one pick was a reach for huff who didn't belong in the 1st round, another pick was wasted when gallery turned out to be a monumental bust, and gave away half a dozen 1st rounders for some washed up vets time and time again.

no contest here. Clippers are on the rise, near the top of the west and a contender. Raiders, should have won that #1 overall pick but with a sensational couple of games early by prior and good game calling by greg olson, we actually won 4 games. i had even told my wife during the preseaon that i didn't think we could win a single game, looking at our roster at the time. she didn't understand why i was wasting my money on NFL ticket on directv just to watch my team lose.
ehhhhh f it.

I basically agree with just about everything. I'd maybe put Lammaer Houston on the list below personally.

Gallery wasn't a flat out bust?

He was projected to be "the next Tony Boselli" wasn't he?

Gallery was still a productive OG for quite some time.

I'd move Hayden to solid and Menelik to bad after this season. Re: Houston, he performed well enough here to have be considered good/solid. Bad value signing for Bears, though

Can't believe how bad Buchanan turned out to be. Projected him to be HOFer. BTW fnq, hope you're having a nice recovery from your surgery.

Cheers turk, was just a knee scope though

I too was crazy excited when we traded up for Buchanon.. Was too young to know whether he was any good or not. Good god he was awful save his rookie year.
