A little on the fence with Guyton, though I have not scouted him at all for myself and am relying on others' reports. He's pretty green, and is a real projection based on athletic profile. I believe he's particularly rough around the edges in run blocking, which is a pretty big deal for Shanahan. That said, physically, he matches up with the best guys in this class. I was listening to a podcast reviewing the senior bowl, and they were effusive about his physicality and his want-to. He was locked in and super competitive, which goes a long way toward minimizing concerns about development. That said, some guys never do blossom, and despite the high upside, there's a lot of projection in Guyton.

At the end of the day, I would probably view it similarly to how I viewed the Trey Lance pick. I had major concerns about the player, but I appreciated the shot at upside. Guyton could be our LT for the next decade, so if that's the pick, I'll get on board with it and root for his development. Though our recent track record of developing athletic but raw OL prospects is shaky at best....

Posted this in the offseason thread, but more appropriate here:

Niners' picks from Dane Brugler's seven-round mock:

San Francisco 49ers
1 (31). Jer’Zhan Newton, DT, Illinois
2 (63). Andru Phillips, CB, Kentucky
3 (94). Jared Wiley, TE, TCU
4 (124). Christian Jones, OT, Texas
4 (132). Zak Zinter, G, Michigan
4 (135). Luke McCaffery, WR, Rice
5 (176). Jordan Magee, LB, Temple
6 (211). Blake Watson, RB, Memphis
6 (215). Khalid Duke, Edge, Kansas State
7 (251). Kamal Hadden, CB, Tennessee

I could live with this draft. Newton would be a very solid first-round pick. Of the available options at that point, he would be my guy (Adonai Mitchell probably second; no OL left worth the pick unless we went with project Suamataia).

I'd prefer Phillips in the third to the second, but there's a good chance he doesn't fall to 94 and he's a good fit for what we need/want.

He has us taking Jared Wiley in the 3rd over Ben Sinnott and Cade Stover, which is a departure from most rankings I've seen and higher than I'd like for a guy like Wiley. Wiley is interesting, as a huge TE with upside, but he doesn't have very good change-of-direction. I'd be tempted to go with another position there, though those other two TEs go before pick 124.

If we haven't addressed the OL earlier, Jones and Zinter seem like solid later-round picks. I like Jones as a later-round guy who could at least challenge McKivitz and maybe slide into LT at some point. I'm not sure Zinter is a great fit for our scheme. He's a good value at that pick, but I don't know that he's mobile enough to do the pulling our system calls for.

Fine with McCaffrey there. He's pretty interesting as a guy with really good measurables and pedigree who just hasn't played the position very long. Well worth the pick there to see what we can unlock, especially training next to big bro.

I have absolutely no feelings about the other four guys on first sight. I thought I was pretty up on this draft class, but I don't even really recognize those names. Briefly reading up, Watson is almost 25, but he's fast and has over 100 college receptions, so not a bad late-round fit. Duke is an undersized speed rusher, but that's kind of what's left at this point. I would be pretty surprised if we wait this late to draft a DE, but we did add some guys in FA.

I should stop engaging with Grant Cohn, but he reviewed Bill Barnwell's every team trades mock draft. Apparently Niners trade Aiyuk, 31, and 94 for 5 and a late-round pick. Niners take WR Malik Nabers. Grant thinks the trade makes sense for both teams. Ha! Awful trade for the Niners.

Value is probably about right for Aiyuk (comparable to the 17th pick), but the Niners are trading an elite player and two top-100 picks for a single player who plays the same position they're trading away. Nabers may have higher upside than Aiyuk, but it's unlikely he'll be markedly better, and certainly unlikely as a rookie. So the Niners are giving up two draft picks to get slightly worse at one position.

The only way I see Aiyuk moving is if we pick up a pick in the late teens or 20s. We could use that pick on an OT, and use pick 31 or 63 on an Aiyuk replacement. That might make sense. Moving that many pieces just to get a cheaper and probably worse player at the same position makes literally no sense.

Run of OT and QBs so far. I'm guessing CB is the pick at 31

All these QBs going early is great for us.

Niners should definitely have a shot at one of the top CBs or Johnny Newton at DT.

There goes two more OL prospects. Why not trade up with all the picks?

If Pearsall can also play tackle, guard or center, then I'm happy. Otherwise, not so much....

Not thrilled along three lines;

1) think he’s a reach
2) means BA’s gone
3) means BA’s gone without getting a 1st

I’d add it’s not a need, but if BA’s gone it is.

Also, and this is pretty irrelevant, but I am so tired of our pick coming up and the desk guys are like ‘oh, wow, him?’ before recovering.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Uhh, yeah. Not liking the first pick of the draft.

Don't like the position, and don't like the prospect.

Granted the board was looking paltry overall, but there was value still there at CB and its a position of need.
