But they also have to make a decision about Calais Campbell too. He's up there in years but currently still anchoring that DL.

There's also Jamie Collins who will also be an unrestricted FA. He's got 12.5 sacks, 5 ints, 11 FFs and 16 PDs in 57 games in 5 seasons.

Though you figure Cleveland must be planning to retain him since they gave up a relatively high pick for him.

Poe would be a great choice to target.

I need to read up on more potential FAs

Other thing is there are potential QB FAs, including Tyrod Taylor and Cousins, if Redskins don't want to pay him, despite him putting up good numbers.

The Cards gave up a 2nd rounder and Cooper for Jones and I don't think they give that up unless they had a long term plan for keeping him.

So he might get tagged this year but I would be surprised if he isn't locked up long term eventually.

That makes sense, though maybe when they made the trade, they didn't expect Golden to be as productive as he has become.

They also have Jefferson as a free agent too, another key defensive player.

BTW, can NFL teams sign offer sheets that the incumbent team must match?

Or at least, the 49ers might think about driving the prices up for a division rival.

Well 49ers have cap room and they need pass rushers. Olivier Vernon signed a huge contract last year, 5 years, $20 million signing bonus, and 52.5 million guaranteed. Average of $17 million a year if he stays 5 years.

His stats weren't as good as Jones when he signed last year. He's got 8.5 sacks but he was one of 3 FAs who helped turn around that Giants defense.

So maybe Jones will get crazy offers from other teams too. If we can get him for an average of $14 million a year, maybe $35-40 million guaranteed, it would seem a relative bargain compared to what Vernon got.

If they get Garrett, then Jones would have to play from the left side, which is where Lynch is. Not sure if Jones has ever played that side, so it might be moot.

Lynch has done okay but has never had double-digit sacks. They need to get another pass rusher and see if his production improves -- he's never had double-digit sacks yet in his 3 seasons.

I wouldn't mind adding Jefferson. Melvin Ingram is interesting as well. Maybe take a cheap flyer on Galette. We shouldn't rely on Lynch for anything but a backup role. Dude is seriously out of shape and is likely to get suspended again at any moment.

Ah I didn't see that, did see he was listed at 270, which is heavy for an OLB, especially one who has to use his quickness.

They need coaches who crack the whip. I look at Dallas' success this year and in recent years. I don't think they only drafted well. I think they're coaches are getting these players to be productive right away, including in their rookie year. Elliott and Prescott are benefitting from that huge OL but the thing is, every one of those OL picks panned out almost right away for the Cowboys.

I think a lot of that has to do with coaching, not just scouting, drafting. And Jerry has two former head coaches as coordinators on that team and they've been there for awhile now, so they've probably gotten good raises and are paid well.

Kelly and his staff may not be feared enough by players to train and develop, because they could be gone next year, so players may not be motivated enough to be fit or listen to the coaches, assuming they're competent.

Another young UFA OLB is Nick Perry, who will turn 27 next April.

In his fifth season since being drafted in the 1st round, he's having a career year with 10 sacks (leading the team and first time wi doubl-digit sacks), 1 nit and 4 PDs. Overall career numbers aren't that impressive. He's making a jump in his career year.

Packers will probably extend him but then again, they're giving big money to Matthews too.

Perry concerns me. Didn't get sacks or step up his work ethic until contract year.

Sylvester Williams could be option at NT if he hits the open market.

Poe should still be the #1 target in FA though.

The crazy thing would be if Perry got anything like the contract that Vernon got, with minimal production. But because of age and potential, some team might give out that kind of money.

Niner should let the big ticket items pass until they get decent.

Why not? 9ers need about four WR's.

This is usually a good strategy to take, but in this case they have to spend a sizeable amount of money just to get to the cap floor.

They also have to massively overspend on mediocre backups (who start) to send a message to future FA's that they don't suck ass the way Cleveland does anymore.

There's talk of Cousins commanding $26 million a year, $90 million guaranteed. He was third in yards, averaging 307 a game, 7th in passer rating, 25 TDs, 12 ints.

Tyrod Taylor averaged 202 yards, was 18th in passer rating, 17 TDs, 6 ints. He's expected to get $15-20 million per.

Kaep was 17th in passer rating, 186 yards per game, 16 TDs, 4 ints.

I would hope the new GM and HC try to address the QB situation in the offseason, as opposed to go into it without making any moves, you know like the Denver Broncos this year.
