Super Bowl 58: 49ers vs Chiefs

Post#1 » by thesack12 » Sun Feb 11, 2024 4:30 pm

This is it, we made it.....

Super Bowl Sunday. This is as big as it gets. Every team's ultimate goal is winning this game and hoisting the Lombardi trophy.

Game will be played in a dome, so weather is irrelevant.

49ers are 1.5 point favorites, with a 47.5 over/under.

San Francisco doesn't really have an injury report. Kalia Davis was ruled out, but he's still on IR. Everybody on the active roster is ready to rock.

Alex Barrett and TY McGill are the practice squad elevations, however both are expected to be made inactive. These appear to moves to do these guys a solid and award them with bigger game checks.

As for KC, Joe Thuney and Prince Tega Wanogho are out and Jerrick McKinnon is questionable. They activated McKinnon from IR, so there is a decent chance he suits up.

Of course this is a rematch of the 2020 Super Bowl, a game that devastated the 49er faithful. There is a lot of overlap from that game and this year's teams. Getting redemption with a win today will go a long ways towards healing those old wounds.

Today's game will play a large part in shaping legacies.

Lets go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It will be interesting if they activate Womack or not.

When Ambry Thomas got dinged up and had to briefly leave the Lions game, they plugged Logan Ryan is as the nickel CB. Which would seem to indicate that they don't yet trust Luter to get meaningful snaps on defense. Of course the nickel CB usually lines up in the slot, which requires a bit different skillset and approach than playing on the outside, so maybe that played a part in Luter not getting on the field. Or maybe Kyle just doesn't trust young players in big spots, especially rookies.

In any event, Womack is actually one of the best special teams players on the team. Which makes it odd that Luter has been active over Womack for both playoff games so far.

If they aren't going to use Luter on Defense, I just don't see the reasoning behind activated him over Womack. Womack is a solid special teamer and can give you some snaps at CB if necessary. Womack isn't a great CB, but he can be serviceable and its not like Ambry Thomas is a good corner either. If they are concerned with Womack as the nickel/slot corner, they can move Lenoir there and put Womack on the outside.

I have a good feeling about this game. We just played a couple of crap games and still won. KC is pretty pedestrian on offense, except for the HOF qb. They were a little lucky to beat the Ravens who played a stupid terrible game on offense. A fumble a split second before a touchdown? Come on. If we don't make a bunch of mistakes like the Ravens did we will be okay.

Which defense shows up today for us, the good or the bad? They will likely move the ball but we have to keep them out of the end zone. I think our offense will be fine, unless the oline doesn't show up. Prediction: Niners win 21-13.

I have a good feeling about the game as well. The Chiefs receivers do not scare anyone, so our corners should definitely be able to handle them playing press man. The big thing will be trying to stop the run and limiting Kelce. And also keeping Mahomes in the pocket. Fingers crossed. On offense we definitely need the OL to play its best game. Make Chris Jones come and then gash them with screens to CMC and Deebo. I think we can definitely attack their defense if we can get our receivers and Kittle in space. Go Niners! Let's get #6!

Not the slightest bit nervous. Totally lying, of course.

Inactive list: Alex Barrett, TY McGill, Jalen Graham, Samuel Womack, Matt Pryor, Ronnie Bell

As I alluded to in a previous post, I find it a bit odd that Womack has been inactive for every playoff in favor of Luter. Oh well, the team obviously knows more than I do.

Of note McKinnon is active for KC. Remains to be seen what his snap count will be, but he can be a tough cover coming out of the backfield, especially in the red zone and on 3rd downs. One more thing for the defense to have to deal with.

I agree, Womack’s in somebody’s doghouse. Ball safety issues? Conditioning? It’s something, anyways.

Edit: maybe they just fall in love with the idea of redshirting some guys every year?

Yup, nerves are building. Can you imagine being a player or coach?

On paper I should feel good about this game as the 9ers are just an overall better team and really have been the entire season.

I don't feel good because of the inconsistent nature of the team and usually when I expect them to come out and have full control over a game they don't and we get the heart attack kinds of wins like we've seen the past two weeks when they really shouldn't have been like that.

And one thing that sticks out to me is Reid vs our defense. Our defense really hasn't given Reid much issues over the years and maybe Wilks will be the guy that does something to throw Reid off but it's definitely not something to count on given the team's issues on defense for a while now.

It's off-topic and OCD of me but given I'm looking for things to keep my mind occupied until kickoff can someone unsticky the 2022 Game of the Week Panthers game thread?

Mistakes, minimize Mistakes. Dre, Juan, Trent: no stupid personal fouls.

I do the same thing. Bigger the game, the less I can stand to watch previews, predictions, any of that stuff, I suddenly need to watch a video on bear attacks or the Schleswig-Holstein question or w/e, but I can’t watch any of that for too long either. My toddlers are like ‘Focus, daddy, focus.’

Andy Reid is the most walrus looking coach ever. National anthems don’t belong in sports games unless it’s country vs. country.

49ers get the opening kickoff.

Generally I prefer getting the 2nd half kickoff, but with the way the last 2 games started having the offense on the field to start might be beneficial.

Hit them in the mouth on offense first
